Re: Insights about alnico 2 vs alnico 5 Strat pickups...

See now I use my Twangbanger with Surfers and the notch position of bridge and middle is pretty decent, but alot of that has to do with where your middle pickup height is to get that tone....

Also.....I don't find the TB to be dirty sounding,in fact it's quite clear and articulate, but it has a bit of "snarl" mixed in with it...I find the Antiquity Custom bridge pickups I've tryed to be a bit too toppy and thinner sounding in my applications, but the Surfers in the neck and middle are my end all strat pickups in those positions...

I Love a good Tele bridge pickup tone and maybe that's why I Like the TB..I guess I hear some of that with the TB?

A fullsized strat bridge humbucker is always a compromise to me,unless I want that tone, but forget about getting a single coil or any good notch tones from a humbucker! That's just me though..:laugh2:

John, I just meant I preferred the tone of the TB when it is dirty as opposed to the clean tone. The TB doesn't have the "sparkle" that I like in a pup when playing clean. :)

Your post was great....I was just giving you my thoughts on the TB is all....It's all good brother!

I do wind, but for obvious reasons can't talk about my stuff here. Even if I could, I wouldn't because it would be extremely disrespectful to our gracious host.

Hey bro no disrespect intended; I've read other posts where forumites are praising your work and thought of you while typing. We talk about all kinds of pups here but I can see where you're coming from. :)

Other than the weight, I love it. It plays great and looks great and the workmanship is outstanding. It's my heaviest Strat though. I don't know what it's made of...feels like Northern Ash as opposed to lighter Swamp Ash or Alder. It came with three Duncan APS-1 pickups...I replaced the bridge pickup with a Duncan Twangbanger. I also rewired it so it now has: master volume, master tone, blender pot to combine the neck and bridge pickups.

Thanks. I do remember the Daytona being a bit heavier than the Strat I had at the time, but it sounded great. The Twangbanger sounds like an interesting choice.

Well, it's kind of the one Seymour and Co. recommend as the bridge pickup with the APS-2's...so since my Daytona already had three APS pickups in it, I thought I'd swap out the bridge pickup for the Twangbanger.

It was an improvement...cuz it's hotter and stronger and pushes my amp harder when I solo on the bridge pickup.

I like the way alnico 2 single coils have more mids and gives me a little more compression and sustain when I play with distortion or natual overdrive compared to the glassy slightly shrill sound of alnico 5 bridge single coils.

But I much prefer the clean sound of alnico 5 single coils over alnico 2.

That's why I use a combination of alnico 5 neck and middle and alnico 2 bridge in my #1 Strat: my Homebrew 57.

No disrespect taken all -- I took it as a compliment. I only meant that I can't talk about it. But Seymour allows all non-winders to talk about other brands all they want, so feel free. (I can talk about other brands too, except one.)
