Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Hey all!

I hate my 5 way rotary in my PRS. I want to install standard pots and a toggle with the Duncan Triple Shot so i get the split tones, etc. Does anyone know what I will need in terms of pots, etc? Will I need a split pot or will the Triple Shot handle all of that! Thanks!!!!!!:1:

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

The triple shot is designed to handle it all without the need for push pull pots.

Installing a regular 3 way toggle will require some drilling of the PRS since the shaft for the toggle is much wider than that of the rotary switch.

Basically what you need is the triple shot pup rings, and a 3 way switch. Your current tone and volume pots (unless there is anything wrong with them) should be fine.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Im assuming you are using duncan pups that are 4 connector. For some reason i recall the PRS pups being 3 connector and im not sure how to hook them up to the triple shots. If you are using 4 connector duncans however then you should be golden.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

RIGHT! If the PRS pickup (or any other HB) is 3 conductor it will not work properly. It wouldn't do parallel for one thing, and I'm not even sure both splits would function. But if it's 3-conductor and you really like the pickups, you can have them modified (or do it yourself if you're a skilled surgeon) for 4 conductor. I have a 25" scale guitar with an HFS bridge and Vintage Bass, that are just perfect for that guitar. IIRC I had to make the neck 4-conductor because the 5-way switch has an automatic parallel position for the neck pickup.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Thanks, they are PRS Dragons but I MAY get new pickups - not sure which ones.
Nice thing about the Dragon bridge is it is 19k so it splits very well.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

converting a 3 conductor to 4 conductor isn't all that hard, you just have to know which ends of each coil are which, and make sure you don't kill any of the coils.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Sure I could do it of have a friend do it.

Do you guys think 14k bridge and 8.5k neck are too low output for the triple shot splitting?

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

That probably depends on the pickup. I have an AP2H with a split, and while the split one by itself is kind of weak and thin, it mixes very well with other other positions. For example, the middle position in my SG with a split AP2H and split C5 is a nice tone.

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Thanks, I know my PRS Always uses both pickups when splitting and that is my preference. I am not a fan of split coils on their own.

If you want to connect a 3 conductor pickup to the TS you essentially have to open up the wrapping tape and disconnect the 2 coils from each other at the point where wire 3 is shunted in. Then you use the 2 "ends" that you now have as your red and white wires ;)

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Is the 3rd wire in PRS pickups pre-wired for the equivalent of R+W to a switch for splits? If so, wouldn't you just jump the PRS split wire to the red and white connections on the TS?

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

its not really true that you need to rout or drill. if you use the angled version of the toggle, you're sorted, most of the times. anyway, it will fit anyway. Did the switch on my 3 old PRSi a gazillion times.

the 3rd wire is equivalent to the r/w combo, but if you were to wire it bridged to red and white you would lose series /parallel switching at the very least because parallel requires you to reorganize both wires of coil 2 to different points.. I´m not familiar with the exact internal workings of the TS but it seems logical to me that you would be able to keep series and coil selection, but lose parallel. ;)

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

be sure you really want to do this before you give up on the 'inners' and 'outers' combinations that the rotary gives you ... i liked those sounds so much that i have rewired two guitars (with mag flips and reverse wiring as needed) to get those tones ... once, i used a p-type megaswitch and another i used a combo of push/pulls and mini toggles

Yes, but can't I get those tones from the Duncan Triple Shot???? Why not?

Orpheo, angled version of the toggle? what does it look like?

Re: Installing Triple Shot in PRS?!?!

Of course you can. You're not giving up anything, other than maybe the outer coils in series. But a series/parallel switch between the two pickups would solve that, while simultaneously blowing your mind at the series/parallel coil combinations. You could have the neck HB in parallel, wired in series with the bridge HB in parallel. Or you could have the neck outside coil in series with the bridge outer coil, etc. It's crazy.

are the inner and outer combinations with the triple shot all hum cancelling?

in order for me to get it to work (pre-triple shot days), i had to do a mag flip and reverse wiring .... does this product do away with that headache?
