Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Probably July-August. I am currently living in New Zealand, but will move home in mid-June. This means that I am separated from most of my rig at the moment.

Gotcha

Don’t know if you e looked at his site before but our prolific very own forum member Darth Phineas is pretty quick to get those reviews done.

The one that Darth review was for the actual custom shop Dokkenbucker a few years ago and seems to have quite a bit higher DCR (16.77) than the "The Hunter" version. Wonder how much different these pickups are?

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

The Custom Shop "Dokkenbucker" is usually squarely inside the 15K-16K range (typically closer to 15K) and uses a standard ceramic. MJ has stated that it is essentially an "underwound Distortion".

Unless it was a Trembucker version, which would explain the unusually higher DCR, Darth's version of the "Dokkenbucker", which he picked up at a show, may actually have been a "JB plus" or "Distortion Lite" as some call it, being a traditional Distortion or JB wind with the thinner ceramic.

Lynch himself has said some interesting things over the years about the "Dokken" pickup...

In this more recent video, he mentions that the "Dokkenbucker" blended qualities of the Distortion and the Pearly Gates (fast forward to 1:20):

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

In this older video, he shows one of the actual "Dokken pickups" pulled from one of his early guitars for use in this custom Headhunter model. He cites it as a "DDJ" that was made to his specifications with a degaussed magnet and ~12K resistance (fast forward to 4:30):

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

12k? Isn't the DDn around 12k? And a degaussed ceramic? I didn't know that you could do that.

We know that the DDn/SH-6n/SH-7 "Seymourizer" comes in between 12K and 13K and WAS originally designed to be a bright and cutting bridge pickup.

I've never heard of the production DDn having a degaussed mag, but perhaps a DDn (or something very close) with a degaussed mag was the real-life precursor to the Screamin' Demon!

According to the Custom Shop page, the new "Hunter" pickup comes in at around 15.4K, which would appear to be an underwound Distortion bridge.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

P.S. - I have to wonder with the "degaussed" comments and the "blending of the Distortion with the Pearly Gates" remark in the later video if he was actually experimenting with A2 mags and/or degaussed A5 rather than ceramic during that period! After all, the A5-fueled Screamin' Demon came out shortly after and his "Super V" pickup was A2-based. An A2 or degaussed A5 magnet in a highly underwound Distortion might yield some really cool results!

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Masta C, your postulation on him experimenting likely rings true; he has made very good use of the Custom shop's talent over the years. I actually asked MJ about Lynch variant pickups on a phone call when ordering an OG El Diablo years ago and aside from the Dokkenbucker/Hunter, he also has variations on the JB, his own 'Demon and the '78 model. She mentioned a few more, but suffice to say, he has done ALOT of tinkering!

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

My Hunter arrived today. According to the box, it reads at 15.80k.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Make sure to come back and give us your thoughts once it is installed.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Expect up to six weeks. I think they used almost four on mine, which is fair enough.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Thank for the details. This is interesting. How it works for you so far?

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

I won't be able to test it for a few months still, unfortunately.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Got mine a month ago and finally got around to putting it in. Gotta say I was a little disappointed...very muddy, no clarity. I know that term means different things to different people. Was so bad I assumed I wired it up wrong. I usually prefer medium output pickups with high gain amps so maybe that's my problem. Lowering the gain helped a bit but it wasn't until I cranked down the pickup to about 8mm away from the strings that I could return the amp to my fav settings and started liking the sound. Would be perfect for my Kamikaze where the body sits far far below the strings, but I'd rather keep it original. Still may try rewiring...pickup straight to the output and see what I get. I did a fancy schmancy 3 humbucker setup with coil splits and a 5-way rotary so it's certainly possible I messed up something.

Damn i am surprised. What kind of guitar did you put it in? Pots? wood type?

I still want to try one and i think it would work very well in Alder or basswood guitars with one volume pot. Doubt it would be muddy with that combo.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Any updates on this? have any of you tried the pickup yet?

I sort of made my own version of this: An old JB-L from the 80s that has a DCR around 15.6 and put a single-think ceramic mag in it. I am waiting to get the guitar back and see what i think.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

I don't know if there are many in the wild yet, and haven't heard of anyone on this forum mention them. I'd be interested to know, and if anyone had compared them to his many other signature pickups.
