Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

So, I really think that since it takes so damn long for anyone who is actually here on the forum to get to trying things so often. There should be a forum member elected to test pickups and Duncan paraphernalia. I mean they could even just mail the products back after testing. But seriously it seems like there is either not much interest in some products (or lots of us are financially challenged) that it can take months to get any opinions or hands on information about some of these products. It would be really good for Duncans word of mouth in a certain demographic.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Wasn’t there a forum member here that has bought one? Iirc he said it was delivered but that he was away for a period of time and wouldn’t be able to check it out for a couple of months?

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Any updates on this? have any of you tried the pickup yet?

I sort of made my own version of this: An old JB-L from the 80s that has a DCR around 15.6 and put a single-think ceramic mag in it. I am waiting to get the guitar back and see what i think.

You're thinking of the "Dokkenbucker"

The "Hunter" still has a double-thick Ceramic and, as far as I can tell upon first inspection, is very similar to the standard Distortion, but with a little "MJ" mystery/magic inside:

Really? I always thought the hunter was a dokkenbucker with another name

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

I'm guessing the biggest difference between the "Dokkenbucker" and the "Hunter" is the use of standard thickness vs double-thick magnets

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

but MJ and Derek and george's guitar technician say it's the same pickup. I'm very confused now

I'm guessing the biggest difference between the "Dokkenbucker" and the "Hunter" is the use of standard thickness vs double-thick magnets

Stats say it's not the same pickup with a different magnet. 15.41k DCR on the Hunter and the Dokkenbucker last I remember was ~15.1k or something in that area. Distortion bridge is 16.6k btw.

so what would be the difference between the hunter and the standard distortion?

I have two dokkenbuckers and they measure 15.9 dc and 16.4 dc.

:cool2:

Also, I wrote the Custom Shop directly about this...because of the unique wire gauge, the Hunter can easily be in the 16K+ range for standard spacing and 17K+ range for trem spacing and still be "in spec". I was concerned when my own "Hunter" came straight from the Custom Shop at 17.5K, but they confirmed that was acceptable. So, DCR is similar to a standard Distortion in some cases, but the wire size used is different and results in a slightly lower actual output. Think of pickups like the Super V, RTM, etc.

I have to admit, I get confused with his many models.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

yea now i am somewhat puzzled as well. I have a TB6J from around 1990 that is somewhere near the 18K mark and it sounds nothing like the tone from BFTA-wayyyyy too hot. I mean i know there are certain things in the signal chains but i mean the pickup just doesn't have the same attack and is way too hot to be anything like "the Hunter". I would really like to see what the standard spaced Hunter in the 15.5k spec sounds like and compare it to my JB+ aka "dokkenbucker" that i mentioned above.

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

I think it isn't so much that a particular artist used a particular pickup on certain songs. Obviously, if it is a new signature pickup, there is less of a chance it was used on a song you remember from 30 years ago. Associating a product with any artist is sort of like getting a personal recommendation from an artist you might admire.
"I really believe in this product, and think that if you've liked my music in the past and admired my tone, well, this is another tone I use"
This is the same as modern signature guitars from people famous 30-40 years ago. EVH certainly didn't use his signature guitar on his most famous songs, or his signature amp. But that association is certainly worth something, and if you dig EVH, you will listen to what he is saying he likes *now*.

EVH is a contentious example, since with Eddie it's loud and clear that what he likes *now* is endorsement MONEY$ (preferably from a multitude of sources, and regularly switching up to a higher bidder)

Well, it appears at this point that the "Dokkenbucker" is not just a JB+ (or a Distortion wind with a standard thickness mag) because it uses a different gauge of wire, probably the same as found in the "Hunter". That means it's not just an "underwound Distortion", either!

It seems likely from MJ's more recent accounts that the largest difference between the actual Dokkenbucker and the new Hunter are the magnet. Of course, a few extra or fewer winds on the coil could be at play, as well, but they are certainly close.

A JB+ is a bigger jump and likely to be higher in actual output than the proper "Dokkenbucker" you speak of

What gauge of the thread used? maybe 43 awg polysol or 44 awg plain enemel?

Re: Introducing from the Custom Shop: The George Lynch Hunter

Who on earth would chase THAT tone? Run of the mill humbucker/Marshall sound that most of us abandoned in the early 80's.

I would. I'm not sure what you expected, but I suspect that most people who are looking at a George Lynch signature pickup might also be fain to have his tone. George, in my opinion, had THE humbucker/Marshall sound, and that is a pretty tall order. The sound quality of the clip in question is admittedly a little rough around the edges, but it must have sounded glorious in person.

That would be me. I am running a little behind schedule with my thesis, but will probably get around to trying this out in September. It'll go into the black Baretta here:

The red Sustainer has an RTM in it. I might pluck it out and compare it to the Hunter (and the JB that is currently in it) if I am overcome by the spirit.
