I'm no Dougie R (or Jimi), but my old.KWS strat was fantastically hendrix-ish

edit- that was the stock pickups...formvar wire..pickups in the mid 6 to 7k range. middle is hotter.than bridge. moddelled on KWS 61 strat apparently..

Love Dougie R. And he certainly played in Hendrix-ish style, but yeah..thats just very modern and processed.

Shove a mic in front of a cranked plexi/dualshowman with some H30s,.grab a fuzz , wah, univibe and hit record. Thats it. Way too much processing going on in this demo.

That's because serious guitarists Record with at least Part of What we Gig with ( Not a whimped-down modeling unit

Are we seeing the new management philosophy of the Carter Duncan Corporation?
As Mr. Duncan becomes less involved and the ingrained philosophy that he established over 40 years begins to be overshadowed by the new management, what will emerge?
If this Jimi Hendrix Signature pickup release is an indication, then it appears that flashy marketing and focus on the quick and easy new product (a 48 year old design) is the new direction. Replacing the integrity of honest introduction of new designs with a purpose to provide guitar players with the opportunity to add something new to their pickup tonal arsenal.
I truly hope this is not the case. However, buying a signature that does not represent the approval of the artist but is simply a marketing gimmick is certainly a dramatic departure.

i think you are confused by/confusing my two posts. The clip I posted was simply a demo of the hendrix vibe in the KWS strat I had. It was not intended as a "better" example or to imply a cheap modeller is a better choice.

If I *were* a serious guitar player, making a demo of serious pickups from a major pickup manufacturer that are trying to capture the vibe/tone of whose signature is on the pickups- I would not be making a recording like Duncan did here. Its not very good at conveying Hendrix tone. It doesnt matter what gear Doug would normally use.

Since when did any signature set magically make you sound like the artist?

I think it is really cool after all of these years that Mr. Duncan still has the records of what he did for Jimi, the story is super cool.

I agree, I don't get it either. It's not like they'll make you magically sound like Jimi. That's unique to him. Myself, I'd love to toss these in to a nice Strat and play it. I know I won't sound like Jimi and that's OK.

I think the record keeping and the story of that day in 1968 is awesome in itself and more than enough to make these special pickups.

I don't know the specifics but I'm pretty sure a ton of that premium goes to the Estate.

And nothing in the description here says Jimi endorsed these. What it does say is this: "The Jimi Hendrix™ Signature Strat Set and Jimi Hendrix™ Signature Loaded Pickguards are fully authorized by Authentic Hendrix LLC." which is something the Estate has every legal right to do.

So are you just wanting SD to take off his signature on the pickups? (that were made for him and used by him.)

"Most" demo vids kinda suck,anyway.Hands on is the only real way to tell,to me.Specs on paper/screen are one thing & informative to a degree,but plugging into "your" amp(s) & cranking it is it's own thing.

I think it's kinda neat,actually,everybody pretty much wins.

Mebbe wait for a used set,unless you're already cool where you're at,plenty of good Strat p/ups out there.
Actually a reason to buy another Strat!

The road to the present is littered with failed concepts that never took off. I really thought the Lace Alumitone would have lit a fire, it looks stunning and sounds very modern and unique, and yet I wonder if Lace even made their R&D back on that. Fishman Fluence, same thing.

Recent introduction such as the Saturday Night Special, or the PAF Master from DiMarzio, shows that the market is hungry for affordable-vintage. I can't fault SD there, but the actual singature is a mark of approval that is entirely misleading. When you put your John Hancock on a contract, it means you're committing to that contract. How is a dead guy committing to these pickups? The target customers won't care, they'll just buy. Good move, Carter Duncan.

I don't get it. More choise is always good. It's not that SD discontinued the SSL-1 and the like and left us with only this.

There is so much choice, and I'm glad this came out, even if it comes out to be mainly for the Hendrix fanboys. But I'll say this: I know maybe 3 or 4 Hendrix songs, so not mad about him, but I love gear and would love to rock a set of these

Lace Alumitone's looks just don't fit with most guitars it just too NASA looking. From what I've read and heard they sound sterile, unnatural...don't know just what I've seen out there.
The Fishman Fluence are just some sort of modeling pickup aren't they? Why have a modeling pick up when you can do a hundred times more with an amp or even some of the better "pedals" out there?
Opinion is just about everything that can be done with pickups regarding tone has been done. Just Seymour Duncan offers anything you could conceivably need in a pickup now and there are a bunch of other companies that offer anything that may slip thru the cracks.
The revolutionary pickup has yet to arrive and from my perspective there isn't a need we have everything we need and nothing that we don't.

Respectfully, I'm not so sure about that. Or DiMarzio would have folded up a long time ago.

And for close to 300 boutique builders to be in business, that's a lot to be slipping between the cracks.

Curious if Jimi continued using these or if it was a one time deal.

Also curious if these are a Custom Shop item that Seymour himself makes money on...or a Cathy Duncan pickup that Seymour doesn't make any money on.

I could be wrong but I see the two as being two different companies...which is, I believe, what Seymour himself wanted.

Either way is fine with me.

Nothing wrong with dreaming up a new product to sell if there's a demand or audience for it.

That's the point of being in business, isn't it?
