Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

I listened to this album last night, and it still sounds as awesome now as it did 15 years ago. As far as guitar tone, I think it's one of their better albums in that regard. (It's different! The mix is lean and not dense).

Does anyone know what type of pickups or amps were used on that album?

Probably still Super Distortions.

Outboard gear likely has a lot to do with the sound.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

On tour, it seemed that Dave used SC-sized humbuckers... probably Hot Rails, while Adrian used an HSS Strat (ACTUAL Strat). In the studio? I dunno. I wonder if they used the JMP-1s back then, though. Sounds pretty processed.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

I'm pretty sure Adrian uses Super Distortion, Janick SJBJ-1 and MASTER Dave Hot Rails!!!!

I'm pretty sure Adrian use Super Distortion, Janick Cool Rails and MASTER Dave Hot Rails!!!!

To be more specific:

Janick: SJBJ-1 Bridge and Neck (with SRV Texas Special for Middle I think) or SHR-1 Middle and Neck with SJBJ-1 Bridge (depends which guitar)

Adrian:Super Distortion Bridge and SRV Texas Special Neck and Middle

Dave: SHR-1 All positions

I have been able to match that tone with a fairly wide array of high output pickups. The best matches are Super Distortion, Armstrong M215, Fastrack II, JB and Custom 8.

Thanks guys! I must try super distortion once in my life it seems. :)

Any ideas for amp(s)? It sounds so different from the usual Iron Maiden sound. Not Steve Harris though, but they haven't had that sound neither before or after. A Matter of Life and Death, Dance of Death and The Final Frontier was/is totally different soundwise. The guitars sounded really dark, almost muddy in comparison

I'm almost sure they used Marshall JMP-1 and Marshall 9200 Power Amp. Adrian might had used ADA MP-1 for some parts.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Dave Murray was using JCM 2000s during the tour by that time also.. Not to mention his Pete Cornish audio controllers built just for him

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Adrian Smith is playing the starting riff, so you may want to concentrate on him if that's the sound you're talking about.

It's interesting that Janick' sound has tons more of distortion compared to Dave and Adrian and sounds much worst IMO, too muddy..

And it gets lost in the mix.

Seriously. No offense to him or his fan, but... IMO, his tone sucks.

Re: Iron Maiden - Brave new world tone

Dave and Adrian's tones have lots to do with the TC Electronics G-Force and the DBX 160X Compressor

Oh, cool. I didn't know that.

Playing-wise, Dave Murray is the one I resonate with the most. I really like his lead playing!
