is a DSL right for me??

Still trying to find that "perfect sound" and my Twin just sounds too hollow... I only like it if my tube screamer is on. I have been listening to some of Red Hot Chilli Peppers and I dig his clean sound. I love that dirty clean sound (kinda bluesy too). Will i get that sound from a marshall DSL? I think i would only run it through a 2x12, cause I find 4x12's too much. any one own one?? or would you all recomend something else?

Re: is a DSL right for me??

I don't think the DSL is right for anyone. I really detest that amp.
I would use a JCM800, at the least.

Haha, yeah i kinda agree i dont like that amp much either. But i have heard some people get good tone from them, not chilli pepper tone though.

There is nothing wrong with using pedals to get your tone though dude, if thats how you get good tone then so be it. Either that or spend double what a DSL will cost you and start looking at higher end amps which will do all that stuff in one, but even then you'll be stretching it. You will find that every famous tone you like will usually have lots of pedals or racks behind it and the actual amp is only one link in a long tone chain.

Re: is a DSL right for me??

i have a dsl100 modded by voodoo amps... i don't care what ANYBODY says, that amp is the cat's ass...( yes that's a good thing)

Re: is a DSL right for me??

Chris Snider has some good DSL clips on his webpage. Sounds like a modded 800 to me (also check out his new Laney clips..that amp rocks..far cry form the old 30 watt 6v6 laney I had 15 years ago)

Re: is a DSL right for me??

The right pre and power tubes will do wonders to shape the tone of a DSL as it will any Marshall.

The JCM 800 doesn't have a clean side to even compete with the DSL's Fendery clean, nor does it have the versatility of the DSL...Don't get me wrong,I Love the JCM 800 and sold the one I Had,but it's pretty much a one trick pony and has no clean tone, nor reverb to enhance the clean tone...The 800 series is terribly buzzy sounding with it's preamp gain setup and anemic until you really crank it up,plus it's a bright amp unless you remove that darn .001 cap off the preamp gain pot....

Midnite Man(Bobby) has a DSL Marshall and maybe he'll chime in for ya?
I liked the DSL series, but I'm still an old fashioned 4 input non-master volume Marshall kinda guy...

And who wants to play a clean Marshall ? almost nobody. Marshalls are made to be cranked for distortion.

True, but current Marshall amps are competing with the clean voicings of Fender and other clean channel amps...The DSL is built for both clean and the classic Marshall tones...Don't forget also, that the first Marshall was a 59 Fender Bassman amp...Maybe Marshall has tryed to go back to that in not only getting the Marshall crunch, but to also get a decent clean tone....You're talking about the tones of the 80s,but I'm talking about 2004 and beyond....I've even seen ads from Marshall pushing their clean tones...That tells me that Marshall is also trying to reach other players these days...I still like the early Non-master volume Marshalls,so this post might be a moot point, though I Liked the DSL when it first came out...It left a lasting impression on me,plus the amps are reasonable and offer some modern options to today's players...That's where I'm at....The rest of the tone comes from our hands and hearts!

Re: is a DSL right for me??

My DSL works just fine for me. I get GREAT clean tones from it and a GREAT distorted tone as well. Yes they have to be fooled with a bit, tubes etc, but I would hav thought that all you guys new that , guess I was wrong.

Who want's to play a Marshall Clean? I do, I'm sorry but some stuff I play requires a different type of sound that full blast distortion.

I get anything from a crystal clear tone to a nice crunchy overdrive , to super high gain crunch!

I played in a band that I had to cover Rick Springfield, and Tommy Tutone, to Ozzy and Metalica, Fuel and creed, up to disturbed and My amp covered it.

I dont care who you are or what you have, you always want something you don't have and I am no different, yes there are souds that I would like that I can't get with it, but I get enough to jusitfy the cost that I paid for it.

I've had it for three years and never had a problem with it.

Ranalli has hear dm y amp and hopefully he will chime in here.

I will say that I beleive the combos sound different from the heads and I don't care for the combos.

Re: is a DSL right for me??

Do any of you have any clips of the DSL's clean channel? I for one would really like to hear what a Les Paul and a Telecaster sounds like thru the clean channel. Does the clean channel of the DSL 50 have an adequate amount of clean headroom? Thanks.

Re: is a DSL right for me??

John Frusciantes sounds come from 3 different amps, a fender head of somesort maybe a twin head if they exist? A marshall Jubilee and a marshall mayjor. The mayjor has alot to do with that clean bouncy sound john often has its 200 watts of all tube power which equals lots and lots of headroom a very good amp for clean very unique i havnt played one but im told that its good as a dedicated clean amp.
