Is it always love at first sight with a new guitar?

Re: Is it always love at first sight with a new guitar?

I still contend that it's like a woman. At first, you really, really like her, but you don't love her till you really know her.

Same with guitars. I wouldn't buy it unless I really really like it, or the idea of owning it. Then, I play it for a month. There's some that you'll keep because you like them, but the ones you play....you really love.

What do I love?
Gibson LP Goldtop with a revolving door of pickups. This guitar has a story I can only discuss in PM's.
Gibson LP Std. Prem Plus with Brobucker/PGn. Kicks ass.
Gibson ES-335 w/57 Classics. Rings like a bell.
Gibson SG Diablo Guitar of the Month. The best SG ever made...Love it.

96 America Std. Strat......like my old pair of Levis. Test bed for new pickups.

All my strats are playing great, and also test beds for pickups. It's amazing how A5 vintage singles of all makes differ in tone and feel. The next ones I want to try are the YJM strat set.

Martin D-28, Cordoba Classical, Johnson Resonator.....I play all 3 a lot.

They were all guitars I really wanted at first sight. But now I've sunk into those ones enough that I wouldn't sell them. If I hadn't pulled the trigger on some questionable ones, I would have never known.

Re: Is it always love at first sight with a new guitar?

I have a pattern whenever I get a new guitar:

- Pick it up, play it, like how it feels, take it home.
- LOVE LOVE LOVE Play it all the time, can't get enough of it. Start to wonder why I have any other guitar at all.
- A couple months later, pick up one of my older guitars and remember how good she is.
- Completely ignore new guitar for a few months . . . slowly start to think that it was a bad purchase.
- Pickup up the new guitar again, and remember why I liked it so much in the first place.

Sometimes this has to cycle through three or four times before I accept that I like the guitars for different reasons and should keep all of them.

+1.

Then when you have a couple dozen guitars, that cycle takes a lllllllllllooooooooooonnnnnngggggg time to get through.

Ohh! I love 'em all.

I usually know what I'm going for. Being spoiled from the info on this forum, I know exactly what I want and what to expect when buying a guitar. So if it feels good, plays good and has the right price it's a done deal for me. The rest is just finetuning it to your exact wishes.
A guitar has to be resonant and the neck should be really comfortable.
Then when playing it through an amp you will hear the guitars character, is it dark, bright, dynamic? Does it have a lot of mids or a good bottom end? Is it smooth sounding or piercing. Does it carry your voice?
The rest is all ajustable in terms of hardware, wiring, pickups to your own liking.
The amp does the rest, with a great amp a lot more guitars will sound better!

Ditto but for the right bass

With my V100 it was love at first sight, i believe in it.

I have LOVED that guitar since i got it two weeks ago, and that Love keeps growing, for me, its nearly my perfect guitar. From buying the V100 i also learnt a lot of things, including the fact it doesn't cost a lot to get a guitar you love because of its looks, sounds, versatility and overall performance.

Guitars are a lot like women. You see one hanging out near the wall in the distance. Its great looking so you give her a test drive and shes fun for while but not keeper material. Eventually you find one that just makes everything feel right and there you go. Sure she may change her hair color or clothes, but she's still the same old girl you fell in love with. Luckily you can feel that way about more then one guitar without moving to Utah. Its also easier to change the quirks of a guitar then a woman.

yea
I'm like everyone else
shop by color ?
does it look good? would I look good playing it? is this the message I want to send to people watching me play?

nah,
its all about how the neck feels
if it sits well against your belly
is it heavy, is it light
is it balanced well?
are the frets even and level?

strings, hardware and electronics can be swapped/modded

if you get one and swap all the electronics, hardware neck and body
you should have gotten a different guitar
