Is it possible to have too many guitars?

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

The problem is that you get different sounds and then you get different tunings.... I have 4 main guitars at the moment all tuned to standard.... A hollow body cort, a Tele, a super strat HH cort and a SSS Strat.
Recently I've been getting into bands with alternate tunings like Biffy Clyro and in that case I either sacrifice one of my standard tuned guitar or I need another one for C# and then one for open D and then another for open G etc etc etc etc....

A vicious circle :'(

ugh, yea I feel ya. I've been wanting to do open C, drop A and DADDAD tunings a lot. I also want a baritone scale guitar too. None of this is in fitting with my 2 electrics limit...

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

I play a lot of different styles. I have a hard rock/metal gig I might be doing so I will drag out my Icemen for that gig and maybe the SG. For my 80's synth-pop thing I was doing the Parker HHS-Piezo was the perfect guitar. The Strat and the Les Paul see the light of day mainly for blues gigs. It all depends on the player. If I was still just playing metal I could probably get by with 3 guitars.

that reminds me, I should play some synth tones through the POD to show you some of the weirdness it can do.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

Oh an my answer to the OP----NO. :D

Although having too on hand within my immediate reach makes it IMPOSSIBLE for me to concentrate and finish things in the studio. I have to take a temporary vow of loyalty to 1 or 2 at a time when working on a project.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

Bonamassa is a collector so I expect him to hoard all that gear just like any other collector would. My take is if you can afford it and have the space and the means then go for it.

Me I could never and probably wouldn't own that much at least not all at one time but then again my needs are different. I think my limit would be 10 or 15 guitars total maybe 20 tops.

Yeah, also been wanting a baritone! Been looking at building one of those too (added to the long list...) And I'm in need of a short scale mini guitar for traveling. The squiers are way overpriced though... And then all these bands with weird and wonderful tunings and also open tunings for slide.... Having a guitar for each is easier than tuning down and up for each song.... Eventually it starts getting ridiculous...

Hehe and then comes the excuse that we need a guitar of each type with alnico 2's and another with alnico 5's so that's double the amount you originally had :D :D :laugh2:

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

I need to take a picture like that, one day. Although people may think of me as vain or foolish for doing it . . .

So many people never seem to understand this. I bet that each and every one of those pieces of equipment was built by a human being. A human being with a family and kids. That need to be clothed and fed and put through college. Joe, et al., could simply have hoarded their money. Instead they spent it on crap they didn't need, so those folks could feed their children. And buy them Stratocasters and Les Pauls.

It's how the world works. It's a good thing. (Ahem . . . the free world.)

I can see a realistic upper limit for myself at 30ish, which includes electrics (20 something), acoustics (4)and bass guitars (4). I'm not into duplication. I would never have 10 nearly identical Strats or LPs, for example, or any other groups of clones for the same purpose. I don't see the point.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

I've got way more guitars than I'll ever need. The problem is, they collect too easily, and it's difficult to get rid of one. I say . . . I need to sell a few. Then I go . . . no, not that one. Nope, not that one, etc., etc.

YEP! my delimma. Im of the thought that you can never have too many, if you have can afford the luxury and it makes you happy. I LOVE every one I have and there are a bunch more different guitars Id LOVE to have and Id like to have a bunch more of some of the models I have. (diff pickup combos etc)
But, In my case, its become somewhat of a burden as I need the money, need to reduce storage space, Not gigging and just feeling guilty that I dont give them the love they deserve. I just am having a terrible time deciding what to sell. The ones that I like the most, if it really boils down, are the ones most marketable. The ones I could let go first wave, would have to be sold at a huge loss as they arent worth much in the used market. But all have something special I like and Im so DA#N fickle, I think I find the couple that Id be happiest with if I could only have 2 or three and the next time I play some of the others, I think, thats gotta be a keeper.
Im gonna have to just bust my own Ballz and start unloading them.

Back when I had a lucrative second job is when I did my gear rolling. I bought alot and sold alot that I wasnt using or I didnt think was that good of a fit. Ive sold a few that in hindsight, I wish to heck Id kept... But anywho.....
Anyhow, Im so picky about my gear, that during that time, if I found one I really liked, Id buy another, so I could play one and keep one pristine. Sad huh?? So, I sold most all the doubles.

Now, I try to tell myself, I need to keep the tele, the better strat, (my lesser strat isnt worth anything, plus it was my learning guitar) I need to keep an LP, HAVE to keep the explorer, need to keep a trem guitar... HAHA, so even if I pare it down, leaves me with too many.. My biggest thing are too many Floyd equipped guitars. I wish I could settle on just a couple.
Ive even tried to be real and say honestly, I dont need but one and then learn to play that one to death.. But its like picking between your children.. But I know thats really what I should do..

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

I think I finally have hit a point in my life where less is better on a lot of things.

I am selling off at least 4 guitars and I will only be replacing it with 1 for now.

I am trying to simplify, I am finding that really it suits me well.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

simple answer no.

I have three regularly played electrics. Good thing is I don't have to stop playing the second I break a string. bad thing is i wish i had more identical guitars to play without tuning when breaking a string. I don't even gig but damn I can't get enough it seems.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

I never would've thought I'd say this but I do think I have too many guitars. I simply don't use so many instruments anymore. I've got everything covered. From the oddball guitars (Dan Armstrong plexi) 1980s shredsticks (Jackson Soloist, Charvel Model 6), bespoke les pauls with and without trems, les pauls with silver zephyr pickups, tele's, strats, hotrod 'charvel' style strats. You name it. I got it. But I don't use the majority.

Re: Is it possible to have too many guitars?

At some point, you have to ask yourself whether you're a guitar player, or a guitar collector.
