Is it time for a new UGF pickup?

OK... another suggestion. We got the '59/Custom Hybrid, right? Why not a JB/Custom Hybrid? Or a Hybrid with the JB. DDn/JB Hybrid or Pegasus/JB Hybrid. Something like that would be cool!

Pff, I tried this for years. I once made a whole bunch of hybrids, and settled on 2 sets. 1 high output, 1 medium/low.

JB/Fullshred hybrid bridge A5, 59/jazz hybrid neck A5

Custom/Pearly A2 bridge, PearlyN SethN hybrid neck A2

MJ and Cathy Duncan loved them. Did nothing with it. Zero. Nada. In fact, later that year they came out with the Duality pickup. Come on, what a dud. Now the lineup is studded with variations of the JB/Jazz theme, but hybrids, nop. And there are many many supercool pickups they can make without needing to R&D anything new. I gave up.

I can see some of the hybrids would be too highly specialized for them to be "commercially viable". Maybe "highly specialized" is not the term I'm looking for. Like, I'm not saying "yeah, a Dimebucker/Blues Saraceno hybrid should be the next thing!". But my point is I would think the JB, the Custom, and the '59/Custom Hybrid are comercially successful enough for them to bet on putting out a JB/Custom Hybrid, maybe?

I've been outta the loop for a decade, but if the last forum pup was the Crazy 8 - that is GREAT pickup! I generally don't think design, in any respect, works well in a committee context.

I think you sold it to me. I decided I like the Custom and the PATB-1 better in two different guitars.

I might have sold one, I still have a set in a Jackson Soloist and they're a great match. These days I usually throw Customs or Custom 5s in most things as they generally do everything I like well enough.

Didn't the stratbro90 have a specific goal of putting a P90 sound in a strat single coil package? The Brobucker started with a sonic goal to create the ultimate hot PAF, but I recall some lively discussions on how forum users thought was the best way to achieve that goal.

I didn't participate in the fuglybucker, but my recollection is that it was similar to the Crazy 8 process where different specs were voted on without any clear direction as to what the pickup was going to sound like. No idea how that worked out for the fuglybucker, but the custom shop worked some magic on the Crazy 8, because it's one of my favorite pickups.

The original forum pickups all filled voids in the Duncan lineup, but in the years since pickup manufacturers have gone wild with a variety of different winds and magnets. They've even created more flavors of existing pickups. Look at the PAF-inspired pickups in the Duncan lineup from the late 2000s compared to now - the standard lineup has more than doubled.

Reverse UGF pickup: We all vote for which pickup to get cut out the lineup so we can stockpile and scalp em.

But to add on to what others have already said, because there are so many more pickups nowadays, we are more likely to get a limited edition version of a pickup rather than a whole nother pickup.

Or since SD is in the pedal game now, a limited UGF colorway of a new pedal at launch would be a pretty cool idea. Like say SD releases a new Tremolo pedal, but forum members can pre-order one in hot pink with a picture of Aceman on it.

I would like to see a Black WInter style pickup with one of the ceramics replaced with an alinco magnet. Similar to the Heretic or Apocolypse pickups.

those two pups use different wire, but a tappable bucker is a cool idea. its a pita to make it but they exist

What's the deal, do you wind each coil to a certain point and run out a "finish" wire, then a new "start" wire, and continue winding from there? Do you have to bring the wire down to the bottom of the bobbin so the wire wnds for the tap don't interfere with the rest of the wind?
