Re: Is Rock Guitar Dead?
I dont know if calling any rock guitarist "revolutionary" accomplishes anything or is necessarily accurate or provable.
However, when I hear The Edge or SRV, I can "name that guitarist" with usually just one note! When I first heard U2 in the early 80's on the radio I know for a fact that I had never heard anything quite like them, it was truly a revelation to hear their songs. His playing has a beautiful, haunting & unique quality like no one else. It's totally his own.
SRV may not be revolutionary in any technical way, but I would argue his unique ability stems from the fact that he was an "open channel", he seemed to be able to play on and on without ideas drying up. In an inteview on TV I saw with BB King, he actually described SRV in that way, and said that even he did not posess that ability.
EVH seems to be god on this board, and I really enjoy his playing, and I would even agree that he probably was "revolutionary" in terms of inventing a new rock style, but he doesn't crack my top 5, although he probably would squeak into my top 10, and I'm sure he's very relieved to hear that!
