Is the Invader too Muddy?

Im pretty sure that the Invader can handle stuff like Blink-182 and Green Day stuff (I mainly play rhythm guitar for these bands) but can it handle more treble oriented stuff like certain Foo Fighters songs or some Guns n Roses songs?

Thanks

While it was in the Tom Delonge sig strat he never used the Invader to record. If your after pop punk sound I would definitely go with something different. The invader is best in brighter clearer sounding woods like basswood. Its really mid pushed. It can get muddy in the wrong guitar or wrong amp settings easy. You would probably be happier with a C/59 or a Screamin Demon or something depending on your amp set up.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

I'm getting a new amp in a few days- Marshall DSL 15 Combo. The guitar is an Fender 2011 Standard Stratocaster and the body wood is alder, with a rosewood fretboard. I was leaning towards either a JB or a Custom (TB-5) actually, but I'm having trouble finding trembuckers where I am and the SD website says the massive pole pieces will work for tremolo guitars as well. Just considering my options.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

Didn't the Green Day dude use the JB, at least for a while?

Yep, everything pre-American Idiot was JB, but they're music is similar to the music my band writes, and our tone is somewhat similar. I'm sure the JB would do a good job, but I'm having trouble finding a trembucker and I have the opportunity to buy a used Invader for a low price, so I wanted to kow if it was worth it.

This, exactly! It can add some girth and body to a cheaper Basswood or Agathist guitar, and also has some real nice cleans. It surprised me. I can see this pickup really working well with a expensive newer guitar that just needs something to round it out.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

I have installed Invaders, checked them all with my Marshall, never had any "muddy" issues. Your Strat-Marshall set will not sound muddy.
A set inside an Ibanez Satriani of a friend of mine really shines.
It seems like a metal pup IMO, maybe the JB is better if you want to play Guns N Roses. But then you would be better of with a LP than a Strat. But then again it depends a lot on your playing, Gary Moore still sounded like Gary Moore when he played that Jackson with EMG's!
If you want power use an Invader. Great pups. Another option is to switch the mag in a JB, put a ceramic in there and you have something else.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

The Invader will do what you want, and you won't need too much distortion to do it either. It may be a little too heavy handed though, depending on your tastes. A Custom will be brilliant, JB may be a little too mid-rangy for you though.

Could using the tone knob or playing with the EQ on my amp solve the mid-range thing on the JB?

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

Id say the distortion or jb would be better for you. Yeah, people usually boost or even dime the treble eq to get it to be acceptable, even remove the tone knob. Definitely a no nonsense pickup, but not ideal for versatility.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

I am not an Invader guy. I am a Custom, Distortion, JB guy.

To me though, the Duncan Mega-output line is

Invader - Bass-Mids
Custom - Bass-Highs
Distortion - Mids-Highs

Pick the pup that's right for You, your amp, and your guitar.

I assume a Ceramic is in the Invader. I'd think the bass was tight and crisp, but loud likea Custom. But perhaps not.

The JB is kinda different. More Old school pushed miss, but not in a Ceramic way. What mag in an invader??? And a Duncan Detonator is basically a Distortion with the Invader poles...

What guitar, amp etc???

Guitar is 2011 Standard Stratocaster, Alder Body, Rosewood Fretboard.
Amp is Marshall DSL 15 Combo.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

The invader is extremely fat and warm, you can't use it for anything more transparent as such.

However, it is so fat that it does parallel mode very well, and that's probably what you want.

Hmmm, now I wonder what a Precision bass invader would sound like :scratchch

You dont need a trembucker standard spacing works fine.

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

Through a modern hi gain amp the invader will not sound muddy, If you're going to crank your dad's plexi or old fender than yeah it can get a little mushy...I feel the "tightness" of a pickup has more to do with an amp, it's gain, and it's tubes more so than the guitar it's in to an extent....

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

Today something wonderful happened. I wandered in to a guitar shop I had never been to before and lo and behold: 3 Seymour Duncan TB-5 Customs. Bought 1 on the spot. I guess that puts the Invader out of the picture. How will the Custom work with the Marshall DSL15C?

Re: Is the Invader too Muddy?

The Custom will have massive palm mutes, a nice full low end, and will clean up well in your strat....
