Is the TS7 a good pedal?

I know it's less expensive than the other tubescreamers, but is it still good? I'd be interested in using this mostly as a gain boost

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

Yeah, they are good. used to have one. It wasn't dead on classic TS, but still good.

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

It's pretty good on its own, but even better if someone mods it to 808 specs for you, or does one of the many cool mods available for it.

Also, never EVER set it to "hot" mode. Sounds terrible.

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

Alright thanks. The reason I ask is because, although I try not to equate the quality of a product with it's price, the TS7 is quite a bit cheaper than say a TS9

Hmm sounds like a good idea. What kind of mods are available? Are they easy enough to do on one's own?

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

Try it, if you like it then it is good...

If you are buying a pedal to mod look for something else...those pedals are decent sounding pedals and can be made to sound even better BUT the PCB's are rather cheep and after mods they often come apart, traces start to lift etc...

If you already haveone and want to haveit modded thats fine just get somebody thats good at pedal mods to do it...if you are looking for a pedal as a mod platform you'd be better off with almost anthing, I'd suggest a Boss SD-1...

Well built, good switching system and cheep!

Oh ok I might get an SD-1 instead then. Does this sound good on it's own too or not so much?

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

it's a TS-9 circuit in a cheaper plastic box.

i have a friend who says he'd rather buy the $50 cheap one and use it until it breaks than the $100 one until it breaks...so there ya go.

Oh alright this makes sense. I think I'll just stick with the TS7 then. The only reason it's cheaper is just the fact that it comes in a cheaper casing?

FWIW, if you are wanting to keep it low buck an SD-1 is the same $39 that the TS-7 is and is a better made pedal IMO.

Also, just as an aside...you can pickup used SD-1's all day for $20 if you look around.

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

I like my TS7 just fine. Tonally it does a tube screamer well enough.
It has the JRC4558D chip, but the switch for the footpedal is lousy. So in time it will break, far sooner than an SD-1 or TS9.
If you get a good price on it, go for it. Just don't expect it to last as long as the other options.

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

I like mine. The switch is cheaper, and mine is going, but I'll keep it till it dies then rehouse it. BTW, I like the hot mode.

That is THE best advice in the thread. Use your ears and let them be the judge. Youtube can give an approximation, but ideally find one in a music store and give it a go.

Yes - the TS7 is a classic TS circuit but with a SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper case. You'll get the classic sounds but the pots may have a different "feel". Also, the bypass may not be stellar is those respective components arent the best - although I think the components selected for the TS7 are probably more/less the same for the TS9 or the old TS-808.

Dont put too much faith in JRC4558D though; there's no holy-grail-magic happening there. All 4558s - vintage and new production - sound the same or too similar for your ears to tell the difference. I struggle between a 741, TL072 and 4558 in similar applications!

"Is the TS7 reliable and well built?" is a better question!! As other have pointed out, they're not built to last forever especially if youre playing regualrly and DEFINATELY if you're touring!

Thats the key there!!!!

Is durability...there are lots of things that sound good and just won't hold up to long term use...

When is the last time you saw a pro's pedalboard with a TS-7?? They don't use them not because they sound bad but becasue there are other pedals that sound as good or better and will last!

I like the SD-1, but it doesn't sound the same as a TS. You can, in theory, mod an SD-1 to TS9 specs, but it still won't be exactly the same. It's a great mod platform if you're into trying that, and a very useful pedal even without mods.

SD-1's sound fine on their own and later on if you want to mod it they tend to hold up to mods better...

I've modded both pedals in the past, and I mostly agree, but the TS7 isn't a whole lot worse than the SD-1 in terms of construction. I'd much rather work on a BOSS pedal all things considered, but you could do a lot worse than a TS7 (ahem...Danelectro).

Re: Is the TS7 a good pedal?

my issue is the PCB holding up to mods...I know the Boss stuff cna handle it.

Also, FWIW...I dunno know if Ibanez uses the same switches in the TS-7 that they use in the TS-9 but if they do they are GARBAGE!!!!

I almost never use my TS-9 and it's only it's 3rd switch!!!

The 2nd switch didn't even make it 60 days!

My whole thing is this...cheep pedals are fine and I have plenty of them but the thing about them is that it's best to use them stock, not put money into them and when they stop working toss 'em and get a new one.

That said a new TS-7 is $39...so is a Boss SD-1 and I'd rather have that...Boss pedals DO show up on touring pro's boards and for a good reason!

Also, there are other low buck TS style pedals out there...

Look around...
