Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

EricH - If you listen to the clips of the bumbox lead Dr. Lo is currently looking at (can't find an umlaut key), it sounds very much like a lower wattage/lower gain version of an 18-watt TMB from Trinity Amps and thusly the plexi 50 that sounds "COMPLETELY DIFFERENT" from a JCM-800. While I agree that they do sound a bit different, they are close enough to each other that most folks interchange them and simply want the "marshall sound". His mention of avoiding an attenuator tells us that he wants an all tube amp. All us folks that offered advice to check out the TMB 18 watt marshall weren't so far off afterall. It is very much a small plexi clone, and it was the closest and most widely available item that met his specs (all tube/Marshall/under 20 watts). The closest thing that meets these specs is an 18 watt TMB. They have plenty of gain on tap and they sound ferocious when goosed.

He's found something that has even lower wattage/lower gain than a TMB and it might meet his needs well. I hope it does.

To answer the part about JCM-800/Plexi. I think most guitarists don't know/remember the difference between the sounds of a cranked plexi and a cranked JCM-800 and would be equally pleased with either. While the diehards on this board are knowledgeable enough to spot the difference in sound, I'll bet that most guitarists wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Most would claim that the sound of a plexi is a JCM-800 because that's the best sounding marshall amp they've ever come into contact with personally. So... Good sounding marshall amp = JCM-800 to most guitarists. Until a year ago, I would have assumed the same myself because the Plexi is a mythical beast that I'd never seen or heard in person before. When you hear the Rev playing on old ZZ-top records, he doesn't tell you when he's playing through a plexi. When you compare the normal sound of a plexi to the old van-halen tunes when EVH changed the sound of a normal plexi via a variac, it sounds heavier and more like a cranked/goosed JCM-800. Most guitarists don't know what a plexi really sounds like due to all this confusion and also due to the lack of unmodded plexi's in circulation.

I'm not baggin on anyone. But I do feel the need to explain/defend my thinking on why I suggested what I did. I'm also not bagging on Dr. Lo either. Just giving you all the reasoning behind my suggestion.

If I were Dr. Lo, I'd go with a TMB as long as bearably loud volumes are ok. It's loud enough to gig with, but it won't blow your eardrums out like a 50 watt amp will. Great jam amp. If bedroom volumes are a requirement, maybe the Bumbox is a good idea. Neither sound like a JCM-800, but both are good marshall sounding amps it seems. Depends on how loud and how much gain Dr Lo seeks. Money is also a consideration.

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

That's a good enough explanation for me and I agree on some counts. Thing is, he never specified which JCM 800. There's several models. You have the ever popular 2203/2204, which was a JMP before that, and then you have the split channel models, then the Jubilee.

So, yes, the Plexi's, JMP 2203/2204 and 800 2203/2204 amps are similar in many ways, but the 800's have the brightest sound out of them. The JMP's are little less gainy (which is odd considering the circuits are the same from JMP to 800) and the Plexi's are even less gain, and NMV.

Good sounding Marshalls to a majority of guys in our age group = JCM 800
Good sounding Marshalls to a majority of guys one generation older = JMP's and vintage Plexi's

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

Hi guys,

I appreciate your input. Indeed, I have never tried a JTM or a Plexi. The Marshall's I grew up with and eventually tried include the JCM 800, JCM 900 (yuk), JCM 2000 DSL (nice clean), and some early Valvestate models. However, having recently listened to sound clips of a an old plexi and JTM45, I can certainly see the resemblance between the tones they produce and the tone of the JCM 800.

Clip of JCM 800 using Les Paul with humbuckers

Clip of Old 50 Plexi using same guitar

Clip of JTM45 using same guitar

Got these clips from the Pro Guitar site.

I guess what I love of the sound of all three amps is the combination of nastiness+fullness+NO MUD (especially when using the neck pickup).

and ask Jim if he takes requests. He built my amp, but it wasn't by my request; he just happened to make something that matched all of my preferences.

Jim builds great amps, simple and far from fancy, but VERY tonefull. My buddy has one of his 5E3's and is running KT88's in it....it's just plain wicked sounding.

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

Just wanted to say that I listened to those clips and I rather liked the tone from the JCM 800. I've got a DSL 50 and while it's a good amp I think I'd rather have something that's a bit more "traditional" sounding, so to say.

Oh yeah....are those 800's without a Master volume? Meaning, are those the heads that you have to turn up LOUD to sound good?

Although I've never personally seen one, I believe there were NMV JCM 800s... All the ones I've seen have been MV amps.

Try finding a Marshall Studio 15!
They're kinda rare, but they nail the JCM800 tone. They're 15 watt one channel high gain tube combos, and they kick some ass!

There is an amp i had long forgotten about!!!!!

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

That's total bull****.
I made different 18W amps using the exact 2203 schematic, apart from the EL84 output tubes of course, and that sounds EXACLTY the same (if not better, than the 50 or 100W models).
I dont understand either why there is no amp maker already doing that amp (JCM 800 2203 or 2204 using EL84 poxer tubes)

You woke up a 9 year old thread. Now that's total bull****. :nana:

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

What about the Soldano Atomic 16 or Astroverb 16, or even the Mesa/Boogie Subway Rocket? I've read some promising reviews of the two Soldano amps.

I own a Subway Rocket and it's a great amp but not for the tone you are looking for.
I owned a JCM 900 50 Dual master and a Jet City JCA22H at the same time and that little Jet City was darned close to my Marshall tone wise at lower volumes. One thing about the jet City to be aware of is it is not cathode biased like most EL 84 amps are. Most are biased cold out of the box and the stock power tubes are absolute JUNK!! However when you drop a good set of power tubes in and warm the bias up they SCREAM!!!

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

I love that classic Marshall JCM 800 tone, but I hate how loud those amps are. I'd like an amp that offers the same tone but that's signifanctly less powerful than the typical 50 watts. Also, I'm not keen on using an attenuator. Any recommendations? Thanks

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

Buddy of mine had a modded JCM 800. The mids would tear you a new one at 3 on the master. This through a 1960A cab with Celestions. The Plexi 45 type amp that I heard sounded rich, but it didn't roar like the JCM800.

Re: Is there a 20 watt (or less) amp that sounds like a Marshall JCM 800?

No amp sounds like a JCM 800 except a JCM 800 and even then a JCM 800 doesn't sound like a JCM 800.

In fact, a JCM 800 sounds so much like a JCM 800 that everybody who owns a JCM 800 doesn't want it to sound like a JCM 800. Therefore every amp other than a JCM 800 sounds more like a JCM 800 than an actual JCM 800.

Think about it.

If you think about it, this is actually true.

The guys at Hovercraft do a Marshall voice/style and I'm sure they could do one in a Dwarfnaut...it will be made with very high quality parts for a very reasonable price here in the US of A, I would email them!

If this is anything like the Egnater SW45, you'll be blown away. Truthfully, this has more flexibility than the SW45 due to the Bright & Tight switches and the built-in boost. I will say that the SW45 does have an incredible Master Volume though that allows you to play at any volume.

My Laney Cub 12 sounds pretty damn good for the money. 15 watts, EL84's and a whole lot of fun.
