I was able to watch Johnny play at a small club in 1986 from about 10-15 feet away, the man owns whatever guitar he decides to play. He totally blew me away and he gets the best tone from a Firebird....Joe

You know, I'm not usually a fan of freaky superstrat-style axes, but those look GREAT! :fing2:

Miiiaaooow! :naughty:

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

I just posted this thread because it's one of those unspoken things I thought of.....a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars. I've owned a few, but just feel more at home on a standard shape. I'd never rule out getting sumpin freaky, though!

Sharp edges never have much appeal to me, but I have a place in my heart for Firebirds, since I've never owned one. The Johnny Winter thing actually didn't remind me. I've been looking at an all white Firebird! Maybe I'll grab it, if another piece of gear I have sells.

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

I understand the post completely. I had an Explorer through high school, but when I decided to start playing again early this year, I felt that the Explorer didn't fit my age. But, more likely that I wasn't player enough to sport an Explorer. So I got a strat. i'm really glad I did. It expanded my guitar playing horizons.

Cutoff age for spandex? How old is too old for spandex?

I think it's more butt capacity, than age. :) (40 lbs of butt in 30 lb butt capacity pants is sick no matter HOW old you are!!)

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

Bah, I'll use spandex as much as I like, you old farts are just jealous :)

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

Friends don't let friends choose Spandex. I feel bad mentioning red flying V's, since Kevlar looks pretty cool with his, but when I say cuttoff age, maybe 35 isn't a cutoff age for a V, but is 45? I'd probably have to agree with the posts stating that it's more about how a player carries that type of guitar, but you still don't see many players over 40 playing odd shaped axes!

Maybe the times are changing, because many of those 'odd shaped' guitars are classic enough for any type of player nowadays.

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

Probably depends on the person. If you feel well playing a radical looking axe at a certain age, it will show, and you will probably look good with it. It you feel awkward playing it, that will show as well. Same actually goes for spandex ;-)

Re: Is there a cutoff age for odd shaped guitars?

I'd say there's more a cutoff age for HEAVY guitars ( i.e. les pauls,late 70's
northern ash strats) And your body/back ,Not your age decied that. I loved
my LP. But last gig I did with it, I put my spine outta wack. :yell: I'm pushing
40 and own a Vee and a Firebird. I don't see them going outta style in my
old age. Think about it... There's probaly more gray beards driving Corvette's
then guy's in there 20's. :burnout:

Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash looks O.K. to me. For you younger folks who haven't checked out Wishbone Ash, very cool twin lead blues/psychadelic rock....Joe
