Is there an Alnico2 PUP that has a tight focused bass like the '59 has?

I'm looking for a pickup that is very near the A2P but without the spongy bass. Something that has a focused bass response of the '59 but not boomy or too loud low freqencies. Also I hate any upper mid spike, just a nice smooth lower mid growl or purr

Huuuuum, i think the 59 has a Boomy bass, not focused at all and not tight
Tight is the EMG 81. but it´s active and ceramic
i wanted a Tighter version of the Custom custom .
Q:p with a little bit more Bass .

I would say that the demon is what you're looking for.

A Demon is an Alnico 5 magnet...as a rule Alnico II pickups are not known for solid tight bass...

How bout a demon and replace the alinco 5 with a 2?

No matter which Alnico 2 pickup you try, it's going to have a warmer, looser low end. That's simply a characteristic of all Alnico 2 pickups, there's no way around it. What you might try is replacing the A2 magnet with an A3. It will still sound similar to an A2, but A3 magnets have a bass response that's a bit tighter than an A2 magnet.

A PG bridge will get you there.

As a quick reminder, an A3 magnet is less powerful than an A2.
Click on this thread to see the little chart I posted awhile back. ;)

These are the gauss specs from the MMPA Standard #0100-00: (Magnetic Materials Producers Association)

A4: 5,200 (approximate)
A3: 7,000
A2: 7,500
A5: 12,800

Thanks for this info! I'd never thought it could be this way...

That's wild, I just replied to another topic that A3 was weaker than A2. THanks for all the suggestions. I saw once that Scott F was thinking along those same lines, but trying an A5 in a A2P. I may try this. :cool3:

A3 may be weaker, but it still has a tighter bass response than the same pickup with an A2. This has been well documented by a number of forum members, myself included. If you like the Alnico 2 Pro, but wish it were a bit tighter sounding, try an A3 magnet first, that just might do the trick. An A5 magnet will give the pickup an entirely different sound.

I don't doubt this but I sure don't understand it.

Some people insist that there's no diff between these four magnets except for the strength of the magnetic field.

That doesn't explain the tonal differences.

Alnico 5: Very strong bass, moderate mids, strong treble

Alnico 4: Strong bass, stronger but edgier mids than alnico 5, bright crisp articulate treble.

Alnico 2: Softer bass, strongest mids, softer treble

Alnico 3: Compared to a2 and a5 Tele pickups, the a3 Nocaster pickups I had seemed to me to have less bass (maybe) but definately less mids and more treble than a2.

What that all about????
