Is this a good idea? (Jensen P8R related)

I am finding out in which way I can reduce the output of my ENGL 50 thunder combo (50watts). After thinking many options (mods, attenuators...) I decided that the speaker is the easiest part to be modified. My combo cames stock with a Celestion Silver Series V12-80 which has a 97dbs sensitivity.

Since I like the way stock speaker sounds I prefer to keep it in place. To solve the problem I decided to build a cabinet with two 8'' speakers for home use.

After checking some models I thought that a Jensen P8R could be a good option. Thoose are 25Wats rated with a 92.5 dbs sensitivity. This lower sensitivity means that this speakers are going to be much quiet than the stock speaker for the same power given. I will be able to use higher master volume setting so the output tubes will be able to get a bit more saturated.

What do you think? Did I have a good idea or is this completely silly? Finally, Is the P8R a good speaker?

Opinion please!!!

Those are little speakers for a Fender Champ type amp. Champs use 4 ohms speakers so those P8R's might be 4 ohm speakers too...not 8 ohms. If they are 4ohm speakers hooking them up in series will give you 8 ohms and hooking them up in parallel will give you 2 ohms and 2 ohms might stress your amp to the smoking point! :saeek:

I would go the attenuator route. The Weber Mass is a good buy.

Thanks, Lew!

I have considered the the attenuator... But in fact I have the intetion of building myself a low wattage tube amp somewhere in the future. This cabinet it is the beggining...

One of my biggest concern it is about the speakers quality since i know thoose aren't as good as they used to be when their were made in the states...

Have you looked at www.amptone.com

I remember something on there about smaller speakers helping with lower volumes. I think it said an 8" speaker should put out less volume than a comparable 12" speaker. Also, I think those Jensen speakers are Alnico magnets. Are your current speakers Ceramic? If they are and you like the tone, you might want to stay Ceramic, not sure if there's an 8 inch ceramic. You might consider using just one 10" speaker, though. I think your on the right track, but depending on how much volume you can pump where you play, I think you may still want an attenuator. Even a 5 watt amp cranks out serious volume and I'm not sure how much smaller speakers decrease the volume. Maybe with smaller speakers and an attunator you could get good results. Because according the the amptone.com site a big part of the rock tone requires getting the speaker moving and I guess a smaller speaker will move easier than a 12". An attunator is the best your going to get for distortion at lower volume, but you're still missing the ingredient of the way a speaker moves at high volume. How much of volume decrease your looking for?

I just need a little bit reduction... Jensen it is making replacements for the C8R speaker (ceramic) and thoose are very affordable. I have read some enthusiastic reviews about them. I guess they won't be the best thing in the world but I do like the ceramic tone of my speaker and do like thoose being affordable!!! :)
