Isn't it great how everyone uses "plexi" to describe almost anything Marshall now?

I've been perusing ebay and torturing myself as I usually do looking at Marshalls and lately it's been pretty annoying how just about everyone describes any Marshall, whether it's a head, cabinet, what have you, as plexi if it's a JCM 800 back through the metal faces. I used to laugh at it, but I can imagine some poor kid, after reading stuff and hearing stuff, and saving up--but without any real knowledge--and getting laughed at when he shows off his new "plexi" :smokin: . I guess it's just because I'm an old fart, but when I was a young whippersnapper, we referred ONLY to the Marshall amps with plexiglass panels as plexis, and the 69 and later amps as metalfaces. Not cabinets, not casters, not logos--just the heads. Anyone else get annoyed at that, or maybe a good laugh?

Thanks for sharing my huffy moment of the day. :laugh2:

Yep, your right on all accounts bro.

.....and a real plexi isn't what many of those guys would want, or are looking for, in a Marshall anyway.

Yea that's what's funny.

I usually avoid anything with the words "plexi" on it for fear of a semi-clean hendrix tone.

That's true. Not usually enough distortion for the younger crowd, to smooth, to "grampy".

+1 :fing2:

When I think "plexi" I think of those thick, warm Marshall cleans with that hint of shimmer on the highend. Most kids probably see plexi and go "Zakk Wylde... yeah (&$@-34 1337 FTW!" :smack:

I get a chuckle out of it for sure. I also love the use of "RARE!" for some of the most mass produced items.

It's the same thing with people trying to sell White Stratocaster's. Nobody seems to be able to do it with making a Hendrix reference. "For sale white strat...Has that Jimi Vibe":smack: :no1: The term `Plexi' has become a misnomer, But sadly when someone says "Plexi Tone"... You have a idea what they mean.:smack: Regardless is it's coming from a Metal face or even a Valvestate.:eek13:

True, very true. Hell, not even what I would want.

Trust me...I never wanted a certain pedal to have that name....it was named Duplexer.......someday that description will bite back;)

I have the mighty Duplexer pedal!!! I reckon that the majority of people selling these amps probably don't really know what the "plexi" sound actually sounds like.

On top of that, the thing is made by a drummer :smoker:

I get a lot of emails from people wanting plexi amps. It's interesting when pushed how often the tone they want is no where near a plexi tone. In fact, a plexi is not too much different than a good old jtm45. Most often folks are really after a JCM800 classic rock grind. (which is about the time I give them Jeff Seals' email address)

Plexi's have a nice grind... provided you can stand back far enough.

Yeah, that's about it. I've been lucky enough to have heard about 20 different plexi and metalface amps in the early 80s, and to have owned a precious few myself and the sound is to die for--if you are able to crank it up far enough. I was friends with a collector and he was always getting some vintage Marshall shipped in from somewhere and letting me play through them and their cabs. When cranked they really do distort great and you can even do some early metal, but I don't know anybody who can crank them up loud enough to get the sound they really want. Even with a band. I sold my 73 50 watt half stack back in 92 because the band I was in was playing bars and you just can't crank a non-master Marshall in a bar. I was buying my first house, and the Marshall commanded more money than my 67 twin. Selling price for head and cab? $500. :smack: And that was top dollar for a 73 then, lol. The cab was the original cab, but it was redone in some kind of tuck n roll orange sparkle. Killed the value.

I'm opening an auto body shop in an industrial area that will be very vacant afterhours so I may venture back into the non-master world then. That's my plan. Then I can just pull out the amp after a hard day and crank it up without anybody caring :smokin: . Oh to dream, lol.

. . . indeed !

I read the classifieds of various magazines, and test articles and i just shake my head as 'reporter' & seller describe a tone as "sounds just like the classic Plexi-tone from the 60's" - and then they are trying to sell a Mesa F50, or writing an article on a Matchless amp :wrf:

Ooooooooh Baby, LOL. If lovin' that is wrong, I don't wanna be right. Owning a Plexi, or any other non-master amp I would liken to owning a Penthouse Pet. Yeah, it looks SOOOO good, but you ain't getting much time to enjoy it. :smokin:

I think that perhaps it should be made law that every guitarist has to try a full Marshall "plexi" stack, on a stage, at full volume. They'll know what they're asking for then!!
