it has recently come to my attention...

that I keep playing my Epi ES-333 a lot more than my Gibson V. I suspect that it is because I get more or less the same sound (pickups) while the ES is light, has airy tone, and feels huge. I like this about the guitar. I like it a lot. I never realized how good a guitar it could be before I swapped it's pickup until I found a good sound and did some work on the guitar's nut and set it up. So logically, I've decided that any guitar I should aspire to purchase at this point, will be semi hollow. Now, it doesn't have to have such a huge kick in the pants in the pickups (I don't NEED 16k humbuckers) but it would be nice for the guitar to have a little growl. Obviously Gibson and Epiphone make some quality semi hollow guitars, and I know Gretsch makes a fine guitar as well. If I remember correctly, Evan Skopp has a semi hollow schecter which he likes. what I have is an ES-333, a 335 shaped guitar with access to the controls through the back of the guitar, this guitar also only has one humbucker. I'm not looking for something different, in other words, just because a guitar is 335 shaped and has humbuckers doesn't mean it's out. suggestions?

Epiphone Casino is the coolest and best cheap guitar in this category.

If you wanna be serious, get a Gibson ES-335 and be glad you did for the next 35 years.

Get a neck p'up to that one and get it over with. Even any half-assed luthier wannabe will be able to route for the neck p'up without completely ruin the instrument, an easypeasy task, even for the dumbest of dumb!

I'd go for the one volume, one tone setup, wired '50s style.

What p'up are you digging in the bridge, astro? Knowing tha would certainly help to mix-and-match a companion. :cool2:

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

Epi Alleykat.

Wider neck, ebony fingerboard, easy access to the wiring, a mini in the neck for great cleans, and a full sized 'bucker in the bridge. Throw pretty much anything in there and it'll sound good. I loved the PCb, PGb, PG+, Demon, and currently an old, unpotted Super D in mine. Take a LP, make it weigh 6lbs, and have it sound like a 335 with more snap, and you have an Alleykat.

II'll get an ES-335, but thats a long term goal for me. this is meant to be more short-mid term.

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

The Casino's cool, but keep in mind, it won't sound terribly close to your 333. The casino's a full hollow with a spruce top.

I'd like to keep my es-333 the way it is, i dont use neck pickups much since alot of the time in my band im just singing and strumming. i like the bridge for that. i also like the way it looks.

While I would rock this guitar any day, it's been discontinued, which makes it much less available.

I get that. I've been straying from super modern hip rectifier sounds though, ive been coming back to the guitar sounds that inspire me. hence me buying a hot rod deluxe and playing a semi hollow into it. the only thing thats got me kind of worried is that its full hollow. not for the sound, but the feedback. would it be impossible to use pretty loud?

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

Full hollows will feedback at volume...nature of the beast. I used semi-hollows, Epi Riviera and CS336...much more tameable. That 333 is givin' me GAS!

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

The Ibanez Artcores are some great guitars for the money. I have one in seafoam green with a Bigsby style trem, and its one of my favorites.

While I did consider these, I have a friend who has a higher end one, and to tell you the truth, I didn't gel with it. sorry.

this exact model. I kid you not.

Re: it has recently come to my attention...

The feedback is part of the fun. I love using a Casino for punk rock.

this came to mind instantly.

honestly, unless youre looking for a one trick pony, dont get the es 333. dont get me wrong, it really is a good guitar, but all it can do is bridge distortion and bridge clean. the cleans are kind of bright, which some dont like. I like it.

Dude if I say "Punk Rock" and you think Taking Back Sunday then you need a serious course correction on what the **** punk rock music is.

That seriously angered me; i didn't know what it felt like to be offended and now I do.

:lmao: I didnt say this was punk rock. I just thought it was an example of a casino being used for more "modern"rock tones.

Keep your eyes open for a used one. I got mine used for $250. It feels way more put together than most other Epi's I've played. I highly recommend it.
