newly acquired Gibson Flying V :)
gutted Epiphone Les Paul Custom (which is for sale ;) )
Gardisten 5 string bass
Squier acoustic

Dunno if this qualifies as 3 or 4 guitars since only 3 are in a working condition...

Well, I got Ginny over there on the stand by my Sears & Roebuck amp, and Bessie's over there in the closet in her case.

Re: It's that time again. How many guitars do you own now?

unless you're a gigging musician/working guitarist, how do you justify owning more than 2-3 guitars?

Because you can. In fact, a gigging musician should probably have *less* guitars than someone that messes around at home.

Gibson SG Junior converted to 2 buckers with a JB at the bridge, Gibson Firebird Studio, Squire JV series Strat (2nd and 3rd guitars have BK pups), Takamine Electro-acoustic.

it all depends on how much tonal variety and/or different tunings the gig calls for. a lot of times i could get away with 1 main guitar and 1 backup.... other times, i'll need like 5 guitars.

It's tough to justify. Most of mine are of different builds/electronics configurations. I also acquired most through trades or really good cash deals. If I had to sell anything in a hurry, I wouldn't get beat up too badly. I rationalize it by thinking one day I'll be a full time studio session player who might need all these tools. Of course when I record stuff now, nobody but me can hear the difference between any of them...

Re: It's that time again. How many guitars do you own now?

Irrelevant. You can only play one guitar at a time whether you are sitting alone in your darkened bedroom or playing to a sold-out stadium. How can Slash justify owning more than one guitar, really?

Why do you play guitar? If you view gear purchases as an investment that you will recoup by playing paid gigs, then sure - it would be difficult to make the case that anyone on this forum needs more than a couple. Personally, I view my collection of guitars like a well-stocked wine cellar. If I want to taste mahogany or basswood, solid body or semi-hollow or acoustic, single coil or humbuckers, I can do it. I would be hard-pressed to select only 2-3 of my guitars that could do everything that all the others can do, too.

So I would ask you: if you are serious about playing guitar, how can you justify limiting yourself to only 2-3 guitars?
