I've been converted

The Dunlop Ultex Jazz III 2.0 picks are amazing. I bought a set of them a set of the Eric Johnson Jazz III, a set of the Pitch Black Tortex 1.14 Jazz III, and a Max Grip Jazz III. I like the nylon ones the least because it doesn't glide off the string as easily. The tone is really warm and gooey and the way i like it but i have to work too hard to get those notes out. The Eric Johnson one was the worst worse. The Tortex Jazz III has the tone that I love but is in a faster shape and size. If I didn't like the Ultex I would definitely switch to those. The Ultex however, is fantastic. The pic easier to hold but also the ultex makes it glide off the strings. The pick is a lot thicker than I'm used to but I love the feel and tone too much to give it up. If they discontinue the Ultex then I would go to the tortex in an instant.

Re: I've been converted

quite a handful of jazz III alternatives there, I think u should also add the jazz III black stiffos as well. i find that they glide so smoothly over strings. ranking interms of glide, i will put it inbetween the ultex and the tortex. i have not tried the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 yet , but i have mixed feeling on the tones achieved with ultex sharp 2.0, which i extensively used once. Although i somewhat agree with u on the EJ Jazz III and nylon picks on less slickness, for tones sometimes they really deliver.

Different picks fit different playing styles. For the way I play, Jazz III's or any thick picks wouldn't work.

I spent about $25 on Musician's Friend and did a pick shootout over the last couple days. The nylon picks are just too sticky. The tone is warm and everything and I like it, but i have to work too hard to get the notes out. For speed reasons I couldn't use them. They sound great on acoustic which is where i want the warmth anyways, much more than electric.

Re: I've been converted

I always used whatever, then I got hooked on the orange tortexs. Used those for a few years and read an article in guitar rag about what a bunch of pros used. alot used the JazzIIIs. So I tried em an LOVED how much more accurate they are. However, I had to work on being lighter handed as my playing was too boomy cuz of the stiffness and the sharp point. I then discovered the Eric Johnsons. Bought a gross of them so I could have some in all my cases. Then, discovered the carbon ones. Game over.. again, small adjustment on my attack as they are stiffer, but I love the grip. Only prob is alot of places dont carry them
Im still pretty heavy handed with them for accoustic, so need to work on that.

Glad you found something that works for you! always a cool feeling.

Re: I've been converted

I have a couple of those Ultex J3 as well and they give a warm tone which is great if thats what you want and need. I like the roundness to the notes it gives but it's not my go to pick.

Also to Koshikas the 2.0 sharps and Ultex J3 are different tone wise the J3 is warmer and thicker in sound but still clear like ultex is.

John Petrucci J3 the best out of all the models i've tried.

Re: I've been converted

whats diff about the Petrucci's? never seen those

A bit bigger than a regular J3 but smaller than the average pick. Also the edges are beveled and smooth so it glides off the strings easier. I was using the Ultex sharps 2.0mm and the JPs replaced them. They are my pick of choice at the moment.

The Guitar Center by me only carries the Carbon Stiffo ones, the Red Nylons, and the Tortex 1.14 J3's. And I was resistant to the change because I've loved my yellow tortex Sharps for such a long time. It seemed weird that a thick Ultex JIII could be so good. The John Petrucci is the same as the Ultex Jazz III 2.0 but has a bevelved tip to get ever more precise picking. If I'm ever at that level of picking, I'll probably quit my day job.

The JPs are brighter in tone than the Ultex J3 and give a bit more definition. They are a bit shocking at first to use because they glide so easily you have to refine your technique a bit.

I looked em up on the Dunlop site and looks like they are alil thinner too. 1.5 vs

Re: I've been converted

I use the ultex j3's too - I gave up on picks for a while and played fingerstyle only for about a year, then I played one of those guys and it was game over. Really like them, especially for hybrid picking because being so short all your fingers are near the strings anyway.

But yeah. Big fan.
