J. Backlund Guitars?

Anyone see these? I love the designs. Future retro. They look like they could have been designed right alongside the Strat, Moderne, V, and other 50's futuristic designs. Anyone have any experience with them or have an idea what they cost?

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

Most of them look like they have a "fish" motif in mind.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

Well it makes sense I guess, with 50's tailfins and stuff like that. That last one is the sex.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

Only in pics so far. I would like to check them out thought I think they look awesome.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

It's nice to see a guitar that isn't a copy of another guitar for a change.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

Actually, they are very Comfortable to play.. They "feel" as comfortable as a strat.

Paying strict attention to the ergonomics was a very important part of building these designs. I'm a musician first and a builder 2nd, So if they didn't play and feel great, then I just don't build it.

J. Backlund Designs Play, Feel and Sound like a top quality instrument should. I would accept nothing less. and i know musicians wouldn't either.

They can be seen at Boutique Tone in Montreal Canada, Hill Country Music outside Austin TX, Corner Music in Nashville TN, & Fat Sound in Cary NC , and more dealers are coming online everyday.

Currently these are 100% handmade by one man ( me) with NO CNC, so there are not a lot of them around yet.. (less than 50 units) but thats about to change as our Corporation (BML inc) just signed a $2 million deal for Capital investments from.. of all places, CHINA!
yep, it seems the Chinese want us to produce these in quantity for sale in China!
also we will be annouceing a Korean made version for sale in the US soon under a different brand name. of course the J. Backlund Design brand name will be available to everyone that wants the USA handmade versions. think of it as our Dream Guitar Custom Shop.

and If you happen to see Joe Walsh currently on tour with the Eagles, playing one.. no your eyes are fine.. He bought his full pop!

our artist endorsement roster is filling up too. and from "A" listers to the up and coming. and Seymour Duncan pickups are available in any of our models.

keep your eyes open for us, we are going to be very busy this year.

I really, really dig those. I think the last one in the first post looks a bit plain, but the first and third are SWEET. What's with the decision to use Alumitones? I screwed around with a set for a long time and was never able to get a decent rock tone out of them.

Most of those designs remind me of the Photoshop mock-ups that Astrozombie had for his Ibanez Jet King project.

We tried them for a while. They do have a "tone".. but its not mainstream for sure.

We had hoped they would provide us the right tone AND look to match our designs.. but even though they "looked cool"
tone is the deal. and so they are OUT. I will install them for anyone that REALLY wants them.. but they are no longer standards.

But to be perfectly honest, I have had customers ask me to install Other name brand pickups that are HIGHLY respected, and they didn't provide "the tone" either.. (the guitar in my avatar had this issue) So pickup choice is extremely important, and I just spent the last year finding out what pickups sound the best in these designs and what doesn't.

in electric guitars, the overall "Mass" of the design can play a huge factor in the tone. and some of these guitars are slightly smaller "mass wise" than most standard guitars. But we've got a good bead on them now.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

I gotta say I like the third one and the one pictured above. I feel like I could totally get my George Jetson on with those.

Re: J. Backlund Guitars?

What did you end up going with, and what tone was it you were looking for? I was initially attracted to the Alumitones because of their look, as well, but they just don't have the girth that real hums have, nor the spank of a single. They were really, really quiet, and the new alumitone "deathbuckers" or whatever they are sound more promising. You never know; it might be a total misnomer like my old Lee Jackson "Metaltronix" M1000. It certainly doesn't do metal...

While I will say that the "Deathbuckers" Did indeed have more output.. they still lack that "in your face" fire of other pickup designs. i do like its picking articulation at higher gains though.. sweeps and fast passages are much clearer sounding than most conventional pickups. IMHO, but they still lack that, as you call it "Girth" or fullness, thickness, fatness, Chunkyness.. or whatever you wanna call it.
I usually tell folks they sound very " pre-processed".. like they have already been recorded and compressed.... not really a good "live pickup" to me.

Because so many musicians change out their pickups in an effort to find their own tone.... we felt it was important to be able to offer several different "basic" tonal ranges to the customers.. but our standards have become the Duncan Custom, the Dimarzio PAF classic. and a customised EMG set for those that prefer actives...
With exceptions on certain models like the JBD-100, which requires a very specially built Custom designed pickup in the neck position.
These are made for us by Pete Builtoff at Vintage Vibe to my specifications and are designed to give a vintage Strat neck pickup sound with a little bit more mids, they use an ALNICO rail magnet and are sized to fit our heavy slant seen on the JBD-100... the output is a bit hotter than a standard strat at 8.1K... these pickups will also be used on several other later models yet to come.

the JBD-100 is also available with a custom EMG 808/85 set as well. ( joe walshes guitar uses this set currently)

Because "most" of our guitars are Mahogany bodied. I took a Les Paul special or Jr. approach to the tone.. Long sustain, a woody mid tone with good brightness and bite.
but we will build to accomidate the customer. and being as I spent several years with Tobias and Warrior. I have a heavy background in Multiple laminations and their tonal effects. so there are very few wood combos I haven't heard and logged.
