Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

I havn't actually bought the guitar yet, it is dead standard but it is going for a VERY reasonable price. I would like to make it into a sort of begginers hard rock to death metal guitar, but it is one of the Jacksons that doesn't come with a Floyd trem.
How easy would it be to fit one?
Would it be worth it?
Thanks

Hey Twelve,

You might clarify a little. When you say it doesn't come with a Floyd, do you mean it has not trem at all? Or is it a licensed Floyd? Or something else.

My opinion is that if it has no trem at all, then going through the trouble of routing out a hole, getting it to fit right, and then doing it all over again because you messed something up is definitely not worth the trouble (and cost) compared to just getting one already set up with a Floyd. However, if you see this as sort of a project, or a way to gain some experience with this kind of work, and the final product is not all that important, then doing all that work might be a valuable experience. In the end, costwise, you'll probably end up even or behind depending on how valuable you consider your time to be.

If it has a licensed Floyd (not an original Floyd), then you might be able to get an original to fit in. But, I wouldn't know much more and you'd need to wait for someone like Zerberus or Davey or someone to come to the rescue. I don't keep up on the new models anymore since I'm happy with what I've got (did I say that?).

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

I'm not sure how similar that trem is to the Floyd Rose. Zerb or one of the others could probably tell you, though. Plus, Zerb does luthier work, so he'd know how much work/money would be involved in doing it.

My initial thoughts are that it's a two point system like the Floyd, so your big question would be if the posts are in the same place as the Floyd. If so, you may not have a big expense at all.

Here is a pic of the guitar:

I have no experience with trems and bridges but it looks kind of like a fender modern bridge.

Another thing to remember is that to enjoy the full benefits of a Floyd you'd need a locking nut, too. That would be some added expense.

It's not absolutely necessary, though.

Yeah but I've heard from reviews and stuff that the Floyd on higher end Jacksons isn't that good anyway. It said they're like the cheap copies that are littering auction sites at the moment.

not quite true. while they are no OFR or schaller, they are pretty good quality.

i'd say look on ebay, wait a little and get a model series guitar or something from the X series used.

they are better guitars overall

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

What is the cheapest good quality guitar that looks a bit like a showmaster or dinky? Used for metal and hard rock, I don't mind changing p'ups. In a perfect world I would like it to be a H-S-S or H-S-H. I don't want metric spacing, sick of squiers lol.

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

i have one, just with a diferent pickup combination (humbucker and slanted single in the neck)

it's a short scale (24 3/4") guitar, schaller floyd, maple neck, rosewood fretboard

though they usualy didnt come with a painted headstock.. or should i say matching headstock.

a bit thinner neck, but a great profile. 16" fretboard radius.

anyway. i LOVE mine!!!

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

Cool. I think I'll keep looking though. I'm willing to pay 330 quid but I don't think that is really my thing.

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?

330 is pretty expencive though. even for europe.

i got mine for 400$ (and i'm in europe too)

good luck. those mid-late 80's and early charvels RULE!

Re: Jackson JS20 Dinky With A Floyd?
