Jake E Lee tone

Yeah, there was a guy who posted here who worked at SD and said that Jake has always used a JB. But I've seen it written many places that claim he used a prototype Holdsworth pickup.

So what's the deal with the prototype?

I've seen Jake say many many times that he used to use a Allen Holdsworth Prototype.

A lot of his tone, is his unique guitars. They were strat style guitars with a short 24.75 scale. It sorta gave him a gibstrat tone. You could make one yourself by getting a special neck from warmoth that is a bit shorter.

That was only the ESP Signature guitar ... a flash in the pan that has nothing to do with his recognised tone.

For a short period of time, Jake had a series of endorsed ESP guitars. He used several variations of these guitars on tour with Wicked Alliance. The specifications for these guitars were: Alder body, 24 ¾" scale length, choice of maple or rosewood fingerboard, frets 1-12 jumbo width, 13-22 normal width, ESP pickups. They were available in Black/White pickguard, Snow White/Black pickguard, and Metallic Purple/Black or White pickguard.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Yeah, but if you listen to any badlands, you are hearing that scale guitar. He continually was buying guitars and changing necks to get that shorter scale. He also used LPs in the studio quite a bit to help fatten his tone.

I still wished I had link or a quote to rely on but regardless I'm going to order a 24 3/4" scale Strat neck for Warmoth and see for myself.

Dont forget he also played a SG while in OZZY.

He does like that white 1 PU SG (SG Junior type) of his. I wonder if he only used it on 'The Ultimate Sin' though. Dunno.

Also: Jake used a hard tail Strat with no vibrato. That makes a Strat more solid, sustain better, sound deeper and sound more like a Tele. Lew

Yeah. I read somewhere that he did all the recordings with the SG...but it was to valuable for him to take on the road (for personal reasons).

Re: Jake E Lee tone

To be honest, I haven;t listened to Bark At The Moon or Ultimate Sin in a long time, but I can;t say I recall hearing a song that sounds like that P90 SG JR would sound like distorted. It wouldn't have that nice compressed chunky sound he gets, that is definately a JB through Marshall tone.

Having said that I am still trying to figure out how he gets a nice clean tone out of a SDS-1 in the middle/neck with no hum.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Nah, if you're looking for Jake using that P90 equipped 60s SG jr then listen to "Whiskey Dust" and "Rumblin Train"......

I gave up on the SDS-1s ...way too noisy for my taste. Point your guitar anywhere near your amps and it's feedback city. Like taming a bronco though ... kinda cool.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

His single coils were Dimarzio SDS-1's.

I didn't see anyone else mention it. :p

EDIT: dammit, someone just beat me to it!!

Re: Jake E Lee tone

let me carify this ...

main.jpg

this guitar is a 1974 Fender Stratocaster with a SD AH prototype
humbucker which basically(as explained by someone at SD) is a
'59 model with doublescrews and 2 slanted DiMarzios (SDS-1's).

I think the bodywood is northern ash ... almost 100% positive.

as far as the rest of his guitars ... they've all used JBs.

he did at some point use lipstick pickups though.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

^^ Also, his SG was only used in the Shot in the Dark Video and never appeared on any Ozzy recording. It was too weak, like Tony Iommi's old red one from the first Sabbath album.

I had the ESP Jake E Lee and now I wish I hadn't sold it.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

rumblin train' was a Black Beauty Les Paul custom according to jake (actually quite easy to hear in the track..to my ears anyway...no superstrat or SG sounds like that)..the SG was basically a prop for the SITD video and he only used it for a bit of slide work here and there....Charvels were the bulk of his live and recorded tones through Ozzy and Badlands...as Lew said..hardtails..which do make a diff...and on the badlands stuff you can def hear the hum of the single coils at times. He also used a Tele on the chugga chugga part of Streets Cry Freedom

details of his gear at jakeelee.com

Re: Jake E Lee tone

that black beauty les paul was /is owned by paul o'neil the producer . jakes tone is so good on those badlands cd's !!!!!!!!!! just smokin'

Re: Jake E Lee tone

I have the video from the '83 "US" Festival and in that he used his white charvel strat, the one in the pic. Marshall JCM800 amps, some stomp boxes (cant really tell what they are, but 1 wah & chorus i know definately). And one single rack unit on top of the amps that looks very similar to a Furman parametric eq. Like the ones Dimebag used.
