Jake E Lee tone

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Jake has never used a wah, from what I've heard.
and the amps has always been stock JCM800's, even
in Badlands where he used some other cabs as decoys.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Go to his website..it details his gear and what he used at various times over the years

wahs are all over the Badlands albums...

he recorded with NMV marshalls for those albums as well

live is a different story...

Re: Jake E Lee tone

When I saw Badlands on their Voodoo Highway tour, Jake had his ESP Sig models, the old trusty white Fender-turned-Charvel, two stacks of orange Marshalls, and the only thing on the floor was a BOSS OD-1 Overdrive. No reverb, no delay, no chorus. Just him, a guitar, and two loud as f**k amps. Absolutely killer tone. He's a really nice guy. My friends and I got to me the whole band after their show. He was really nice and liked talking about the gear and stuff. It was cool. Craig was very down to earth. Gave me some help with playing bass (which I was doing at the time for fun). Anyway, that's OT.

Re: Jake E Lee tone

JCM800's is what was his livesound through Ozzy and Badlands.
Cranked JCM800's and a jap.made OD-1 with the driveknob

Shhhhhhhhhhh, you just gave the secret of 80's metal guitar tone away :laugh2:

Re: Jake E Lee tone

I saw Jake at a small club in Seattle called The Firehouse in Seattle about 8-9 years ago.

Two 5150 full stacks, normal (clean, HA!) channel, wide open, master wide open.

We left early. My ears are still ringing.

this guitar is a 1974 Fender Stratocaster with a SD AH prototype
humbucker which basically(as explained by someone at SD) is a
'59 model with doublescrews

.

dude they told you wrong then!:smack:
the AH duncan is a 16.3K humbucker and in no way like a 59:beerchug:

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Here's a recent interview with Jake that confirms some of the things that have been said in this post. The rest of it is at the Dinosaur Rock Guitar website

I've seen discussions on various message boards regarding what pick-ups Jake is using and asked him to straighten the matter out.

"The single coils have always been DiMarzio SDS1's, the only great sounding pickup I think they ever made. The humbucker was at one time a Duncan Holdsworth prototype, but mostly it's been a Duncan Jeff Beck. Presently I'm trying out different pickups. Don't know exactly what I'm looking for, but hopefully I'll know when I hear it. I've always loved the sound of P-90's and Lipsticks, but they can be so noisy it ultimately becomes grating, same as my old Uni-Vibe. I loved the glassy, liquid sound I got from it, but it was so noisy I'd avoid using it. I ended up selling it because of that, even though I've yet to hear anyone else's version of it come close to sounding as good," he says.

Another thing I've noticed is Jake is never using a whammy bar. How come?

"Back in '75 my only guitar was a Gibson SG standard and I wanted to add a Strat, so I worked at a local music store in exchange for any Strat in the store. I thought they all came with wiggle-sticks, but when I went through all the guitars, about 20, to find the one I liked the best, there was one without the bar that sounded way better than any of the others. That's the one that became my favorite. Later it was repainted by my roommate who worked in the Charvel paint shop. Ever since, I've felt that any tremolo (vibrato, really) system on a guitar takes away from the tone, at least the tone I'm looking for."

i read hrough the thread and the only thing about the pup is that it is a double screw 59 not a AH pup
here is the AH-1 and let me tell you that they ONLY thing about it that is different from a stock JB is the double screws!
I made a AH-1 from a JB and al it did was make it smoother ala alan holdasworth legato style

no. I said the PROTOTYPE is explained to be a '59 with doublescrews.
I didn't say nothing about the AH-1.

hey wicked i have a trem spaced AH-1 that is 17.4k from the custom shop and it is very cool in my guitar with a maple fretboard nice for a badlands kinda tone !!!!!!!!!!

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Something else to remember about Jake is that his Strat style guitars do not usually have a vibrato. If I remember correctly, he used hardtail/string-through-body guitars for the most part. Kind of like a Tele. That'll give a differant tone and response than a Strat with all those springs around back and a vibrato. Lew

Re: Jake E Lee tone

Holy Crap Lew, that's the 3rd time you've said that in this thread!
It's kool to be on each page though.
