Jazz III pick roundup

I have the standard black, red and the cf ones. I prefer the cf ones for tone and feel, my only minor issue is the can be a little chirpy sometimes.

The grip on the red and black arent too bad becaise of the raised lettereling but not nearly as good as the cf.

Size of the Jazz III s dont bother me at all, before those I had used the small Fender teardrop picks. My old guitar teacher got me using probably close to 30 yrs ago, so the transition was pretty easy, just had to adjust to the change in thickness

Ultex 2.0 Jazz III - This pick was disappointing. There's some sort of weird bevel going on so the picking edge actually feels thinner than the regular Ultex. I also find it to sound a bit brighter than the regular Ultex, and it doesn't seem to grip as well in the hand.

I generally like the original Jazz series from I to III. I for less attack and more roundness, III's for punch, and II's for an in-between. Took a bit of time getting used to. I also enjoy D'Andrea's pro plec, although it's got less of an attack compared to the Jazz.

For Ultex picks, you need to go up 1 thickness size from your preferred Tortex thickness if you want a similar feel

Example. if you play a yellow .73 Tortex, try an .88 Ultex for similar experience.

Usually a pick bevel starts near the edge of the pick to make it slide easier on the strings. But on the ultex 2.0 the bevel seems to start at the middle of the pick and then slowly move out to the edges. So the middle of the pick is 2 mm, but the very edge of the pick feels like it's less than .088. So bizarre.

I like the Max Grip Carbon Fiber Jazz III because I got a bunch of them on sale and I've grown accustomed to them. Are there better Jazz picks out there? Probably.

Picks are like golf clubs, if you get one that's too nice you have no one to blame but yourself when you slice the ball 50 yards into the woods.

I’m trying to find non-acrylic replacements for my VPick Medium P, a “spiky” big triangular pick. It looks like it could be an option. It’s not acrylic, is it?

Unless I need a whole lot of pinch harmonics, I use the jazz3 Max grip in carbon. They really help with my accuracy. I have really grown to love that pick.

I've also got the red plastic ones which I don't like nearly as much.

The Dunlop flow is slightly larger than a Jazz III, about the same size as the Dava pick. Both of them are slightly smaller than a standard pick. Dunlop flows are made of ultex material. I like ultex, it's hard wearing, bright but not too bright, and will polish up very smooth after some breaking in time over the strings.

Yeah that cf max-grip basically sticks to your finger and thumb.

So after trying serval pick versions over the years and playing many live gigs I’ve found:

- Jazz iii shape is my favorite and the small pick size with pointed tip gives me the most picking accuracy, stability, and least likelihood of losing grip.
- The max grip is the least likely to fly out of my grip
- The red ones are easiest to see

……so……after finding the right shape for my style, all other concerns are around if I’ll lose grip and how easy it is to see on a stage.

As a long-time Jazz III guy, I switched to the Ernie Ball Prodigy 2 mm in the small Jazz-ish size (they're actually a bit smaller than the normal Jazz III), and I can't imagine ever using anything else. They sound great, something about their texture makes them easier to grip despite being smaller, being smaller gives them even better control and pinch harmonics, and the bevel makes them super-fast.

I used those for awhile but found they wear too fast. I'd manage to round the edge off after an hour or two of playing and the difference was noticeable. I really liked them when fresh but got tired of constantly swapping picks.

I'm using the carbon fiber Jazz 3s now. I don't like them as much but they last forever so it's one less thing to worry about. If they made a carbon fiber in the prodigy shape (particularly the bevel), I'd absolutely buy that instead.

I am a sweaty guy, so the more grip that I can get on the pick the better - it usually translates into me being able to keep a lighter hold on the pick which lets me relax and play faster.

Me too. Many people equate the max-grip to gripping, but it's more about not gripping.

I use a Jazz III Tortex .88. I switched from the standard Tortex .88 about 6 years ago and noticed my rhythm playing got much tighter. I cant even go back to standard picks anymore.
