Jazz III picks

Never tried them. I like Dunlop regular nylon picks but was wondering which is preferred Jazz III or Eric Johnson?

Re: Jazz III picks

I like the Jazz III XL, they're regular sized picks, which works better for me as I have bigger hands. Same thickness and point as the Jazz III though.

Re: Jazz III picks

the eric johnson ones look interesting.

I like jazz 3s myself, for when I'm playing solos and stuff. not chords.

they dont get in the way and have good feel and grip. i tried both the black and the red and they work the same in my hands.

Re: Jazz III picks

I Looooove Jazz III, I always buy the red and the black ones, but for some reasons I ALWAYS loose the red ones pretty fast so I pretty much only play black ones... But I think they're the same. One thing I like about them is that they're pretty hard and they last for a long time compared to other picks.

I only use them on electric too, for accoustic I go Dunlop nylon .60 or .73 (something like this, the grey ones).

Re: Jazz III picks

I switched to Jazz III's about 5 months ago an have going back and fourth between the regualt Jazz III's, the EJ Jazz III's, Jazz III XL's, the Stiffo Jazz III's, Max Grip Jazz III's and the Max Grip Carbon Fiber Jazz III's...

All are great picks but more and more I am liking the EJ's best....the surface area seems to be easier to grip plus they are a matte finish over the gloss of the regular Jazz III's also making it easier to hold on to. I also like the Jazz III XL's since they are nearly the same size at a Fender 351...same size pick I've been using for pushing 20 years now but the Jazz III size is a little more agile and easier to work with in ways.

The Max Grip Jazz III's are cool too and the Carbon Fiber Jazz III are also pretty cool...

Re: Jazz III picks

I used to use them exclusively... but I like a little more bite in my attack, and the .73 Ultex sharps give that to me. Almost too much. I wish there was something between a Jazz III and a .73 Ultex Sharp.

Re: Jazz III picks

Like TGWIF said, the only difference between a regular red Jazz III and a EJ Jazz III is that the EJ's are matte and have a nice grip to them. It might be just me, but they feel worn in from the get go if it makes sense.

Re: Jazz III picks

I used to use exclusively Jazz IIIs. first the red ones, then the black (they grip better), and then the ultex ones (better grip, lighter feel, better sound, slightly more flexible too).

that was until i started having to play super fast rhythm stuff that i really needed a more flexible pick for.

I don't use Jazz IIIs anymore, just the .50 mm black tortex pointed tip jazz picks.

Re: Jazz III picks

I use to use std. jazz IIIs but lately have been using max grips.

The jazz Is are really nice for chords but there is no bite for solos.

Actually the make up of the nylon is different...the EJ's are a little softer both in feel and in terms of flex...it's a very minor difference to me but the difference in feel is HUGE!

Re: Jazz III picks

You have got to be joking me! I ordered some red ones casue of all the hubub and thay looked good, and they arrived and they are these tiny little toy picks.
You guys must have lady fingers! With my fat stubies, I could barely get a grip with much of the tip at all poking out. Theres no way I could get soem force out of em to really generate energy into any fretboardtheatrics.
IN fact, Ive gone the other way entirely to these big ol triangle shaped Dunlop Ultex and Tortex picks..even bone foracoustic, but my maon pick remaions the Dunlop nylon 1mm.
Obviously im missing something in the translation, i mean, If EJ uses the JazzIII's, I don't get it though.

Re: Jazz III picks

Thanks. I did really like the feel of them. Will order some XL's!

They are damn near the same size as a standard Fender 351 pick but at Jazz III thickness...I used them to transition to regular Jazz III's and still use them for sometimes...I'm still not completely comfortable with the Jazz III's.

Re: Jazz III picks

I love the small, sharp tip, which makes for a fast, immediate attack. They're great for lead work.

However, I hate them for struming chords. They're too stiff in that regard and start to force themselves out of my hand till I'm playing with the side of the pick, not the tip. I end up using a little bit of gorilla snot on them so I can keep my hold on them without having to supergrip the pick, which tenses up my whole wrist and makes my picking sloppier.

I've been thining about trying the Jazz XLs or the Ultex Jazz to see if those grip at all better without having to resort to sticky goop.

Re: Jazz III picks

I dig the red ones...after a minute or so, I can forget I have a pick at all. Red is better than the black ones for me cause they just sound and feel a bit better.

I need to try the EJs...
