Jazz III picks

Re: Jazz III picks

I like them for chords!

I feel I am more accurate in choosing which notes I want in chords. Like the Jimi Hendrix mini chord type things...

Re: Jazz III picks

Lately I like the old Fender 358's in medium. I did get some Tortex Jazz in in think .68mm. They're on the thin side but stiff. Work fine for me, but the 358's seem easier to use.

I tried the 358'as for a while but just can't get a grip on them.

I did buy a bag of 451's (mini 351's) in heavy and extra heavy and kind of dig those...

The truth is I still like the tone and feel of a Fender celluloid pick best but I burn through them in less than a half hour of play time...the Jazz III's last FAR longer than the celluloid picks so I've taken to using them.

Re: Jazz III picks

I really like the EJ Jazz III's - more comfortable and grippy.

Re: Jazz III picks

for years I used the dunlop tortex oranges.. Loved them! I bought a ton and had half dozen in every case.. Then... I tried the Jazz IIIs.. At first, I didnt like them because of the point, my attack was too hard.. Then I got used to them and my accuracy and speed improved. I cant use anything else now..
I wanted to like the black ones, cuz I love black and half my guitars are black, but the reds feel better. then the EJs came out and they are just right..

Sadly, I have about 60 unused orange tortexs laying around..

Re: Jazz III picks

I used Dunlop 1.14mm Gators for a long time, then I bought some red Jazz IIIs out of curiosity about a year or so ago and became an instant convert - I really like the small size and the sharper point, much better control when playing. Last week I bought a pack of black ones for kicks and I like the grippy feel.

Nowadays when I try to play regular sized picks, they feel too big and clumsy. I also find that the Jazz III isn't too percussive sounding; strongly dislike pick-clack soaked tone.

Re: Jazz III picks

Jazz III's are the best . . . I'm quite partial to the red ones. My only beef with them is that I find they can get a little slippery, so I usually take a pen knife and mark up the back of any new pick so that I can get a better grip on it.

Re: Jazz III picks

I've used the reds for years, coming from regular-sized thin/medium picks. Once thing I do miss sometimes is the subtle nuance of really working the strings with thinner/bigger picks, which you can't seem to do as much of with the much thicker JazzIIIs IMO. If you try to bash the strings, you'll either break one or send one string on a warped path and get that "braaahhhhhhwwwwng" thing (bad). And you can only go so soft with them before they're slipping.

Usually I turn them sideways for strummed parts, and even then I'm barely holding the pick.

It's kinda like using ultra-high-gain rigs - you don't have to attack the strings to get the full tone just like you don't have to slam the pickup/front-end to overdrive the amp further to get more drive out of it.

But there's no arguing the speed increase you get when tremolo picking with a small stiff pick that doesn't flex like a larger one, and doesn't have as much surface-area coming into contact with the strings to slow it down.

And the reds are a different material than the black ones. The black ones are stiffer, like delrin or something. The reds are nylon.

Re: Jazz III picks

I like the Dunlop regular Nylons and Snarling Dogs Brain picks. But I'm willing to try the Jazz or EJ. Trouble is I play alot of chords as well as playing some lead scales.

Try the Max Grip Jazz III's...you'll never drop 'em and if you want a slightly different feel tone and a pick that never seems to wear out try the Carbon Fiber Jazz III's!

Re: Jazz III picks

JAZZ IIIs are the best pick of the electirics, ever....

1) JAZZ III : This was the first Jazz III i have ever tried and it changed my world. Great pick for metal. Alternate picking became easy with this pick for me. (I used to use Fender heavy). The only issue was, it was slippery if my hands get sweaty after 30mins of practicing.

2) JAZZ III - Tortex Pitch Black : I have tried the 1mm version due to problems with slippery JAZZ III. This was everything regular JAZZ III can offer plus no more dropping the pick. Also as it was thinner the sound get a little warmer and legato playing got easier. The issue with this one is getting worn out real fast. The tips disappears after one week and alternate picking becomes difficult.

3) JAZZ III - Ultex : I wanted give this try due to fast consumption of Tortex JAZZ IIIs. This turn out to be a great combination of regular and tortex JAZZ III. Not slippery, tip does not wear out fast. It is great for all styles and techniques. Due to the material it was manufactured, It sounds a touch brighter than the tortex though but it is not a big deal.

4) JAZZ III - MaxGrip : To my ears they sound just like a regular or ultex JAZZ III. They are definitely not slippery. But the feeling, the feeling is weird... It is one of those thing. I will either love it or hate it. I actually bothered my fingers. I had this thorn like feeling.
