Jazz III picks

When I was in high school, I discovered the Dunlop Jazz III pick. Shortly after getting use to it, my playing rapidly improved. I play with them for the next fifteen years. In 2005, I switched back to a normal 1.0mm pick to accommodate my bands desires to have logos printed on our picks. I've been using "normal" picks since. Tonight I found one of my old Jazz IIIs. I've been trying to relearn playing with them. So far, it has been a bit of a challenge. It's like learning to play all over again. Lol.

Re: Jazz III picks

That's funny...

I go back and fourth with picks but I have gotten to a point where for the most part I prefer them smaller, like a Jazz III size. I'd actually been using fender 451's for a while now, they are the same shape as a 351 but about the size as a Jazz III...love 'em but Fender discontinued them!

So, I'm back on a Jazz III kick for now!

Re: Jazz III picks

I switched to red III's back in '03. Never looked back. 'Normal' picks feel like I'm playing with a friggin' boat oar.

Re: Jazz III picks

I used orange tortexs for years. kept about 5 in every case. one day I tried a jazz III. WOW! Then I have moved thru the eric johnson ones and now my fav are the carbon fiber black ones cuz they have the grip nubs.. I gave a big bag of orange tortexs to my kids..

Re: Jazz III picks

For years, I've used random picks. About 15 years ago, I discovered Dunlop Derlins. I worked my way from .96, to 1.14, to finally 1.5, which I've been using for a few years now, and don't plan on changing. I've tried the white Pickboy Jazz 1.5; the Pickboy Rainbow 1.5 with pos a grip, and Dunlop Jazz III, which has a decent tone, but was a little smaller than I'm used to.

Re: Jazz III picks

I just bought some Jazz III "stiffos" the other day, just because I've read so much about them here. I usually use yellow Tortex. So, they felt wierd at first, but after a couple weeks of playing them, I'm starting to really like them, and the ol' yellers feel way too big.

Might try the thinner versions...

yeah, for me it was hard at first. Was ALOT easier to pick, but my strumming was really harsh til I got used to them.

Re: Jazz III picks

I love Jazz III's... but have always found them a bit slippery.... I love the Ultex models and the Carbon Fibre max grips, as they're not so slippy, and they have a bright sound..

Re: Jazz III picks

Jazz iii too slippery. Ibanez Paul Gilbert picks are the same size but waaay more comfortable than any of the dunlops. There's even a sandpaper grip version.

The 451's are my favorite pick. I didn't know Fender discontinued them. Glad I bought a 72 pack last time I purchased them!

Re: Jazz III picks

I tried the Jazz IIIs a few years back so I could improve my picking technique and clarity. It was a little bit of an adjustment but now I cannot use anything else.

sometimes they could be tricky for palm muted downstrokes but you can train that too.

For acoustic I still use Dunlop tortexs of various thicknesses but the black stiffo Jazz III is my pick of choice.

Tremonti was a big proponent of these but lately I think he switched to a larger pick.

The funny part about that is that Paul Gilbert doesn't even use those picks. He uses orange Tortex picks, because he likes the thinness of them.

I use the Tortex Jazz III. I like the shape, but could never get used to using a nylon pick. I wasn't a huge fan of the timber it produced, so when they released the Tortex ones, it was love at first strum.

Re: Jazz III picks

I was using jazz iii's for the last year or so, because they were good for accuracy (stiff) and string noise (in my experience the smaller and sharper shape reduces it). But it takes a lot of energy to move the pick through the strings, particularly if you strum a lot like I do. So now I'm back to my dunlop .73 nylon picks. I no longer feel like I'm fighting against the guitar anymore, and since this pick doesn't move the string as much my sustain is improving. Maybe I just like playing with a light feel?

In the future I'll probably switch back to heavier picks again, complaining that the nylon picks are inaccurate and lacking in dynamics. Sigh.

Re: Jazz III picks

And the point of this thread is...

Lol I'm sure you didn't mean to crack a joke, because you have no sense of humour, but you did, and it made me giggle.

as for me and Jazz IIIs, I started using them first around 7 or 8 years ago. Did wonders for my picking accuracy and overall playing precision. Since then I have checked out lots of other kinds of picks, but i keep going back to the pointy jazz shape. Right now I use Tortex pointy jazz L3s (they're about 0.5mm thick, and very pink...). I originally switched to these because the lightning fast, tight, complicated rhythm work that I played in my old band required a pick with a little more flex and bounce.

I still have a little stash of Ultex Jazz IIIs which I used up until a couple years ago. Things sound like glass bells. love em.

Re: Jazz III picks

Ever since I switched to Jazz III's, I have never broken a string. I get so much better control over my strumming and picking without excessive force.

The big question is...WHAT THE HELL IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE RED AND BLACK ONES???!!!

I just can't figure it out. I prefer the black ones for some reason.

I also love the max grip versions. Mmm...grippy.
