JB Bummer

Well you try to make an informed decision…..

I just put a JB TB-4 in my Charvel DLX375, and I'm not happy with it. It's sterile. There's no life in it. Pinch harmonics are near impossible. It's crisp and clean, but no caffine. The stock Jackson J-90 pick-up was better.

I'm looking for a more compression feel like the single coil sized Hot-Rail. Something that squeals like your stereotypical 80's guitar Gods. Pinch Harmonics are a must and a key to my playing style.

Now what? I'm going to give it another shot. Suggestions?

Re: JB Bummer

The Jackson J90 is no slouch, I've been told.

For a stock pickup, it really does scream!!!

I'm just really curious about the pinch harmonics and the JB, a JB in my hands screams 80's guitar.

Try a duncan distortion or the parallel axis version, I've heard that pickup and it smokes!!!

Re: JB Bummer

Your description of the JB sounds like...well, not a description of a JB! That leads me to believe something else is wrong. What value Pots are you using, what amp are you playing through, have you raised/lowered the pickup?? I find that the JB gets nice and full the closer it is to the strings, it thins out when lowered (YMMV)

Re: JB Bummer

Distortion or Custom will give you that 80's feel and squeal, if the JB isn't cutting it for you.

Re: JB Bummer

yeah JB has to be in the right guitar. For what you want, you want a distortion or custom like others have mentioned, probably a distortion is what you want. HUGE difference in sound than the JB. The JB has a more open and dynamic sound even though it has high impedance, its not a great metal pup IMO compared to others, but i love it anyway for other stuff.

Also JB needs to be pretty close to the strings, raise the height up pretty high and make sure all the screws are even, just raised above the pickup cover.

That's exactly how my JB behaves I'd like to get a custom but considering I've only got $45 for food for the next month, I don't have the cash to blow.

I'd get a custom.

The JB is very picky on which guitar it is installed in. I have heard it sound good in 3 guitars and I have heard it sound the way the author desribed it in MANY guitars. It takes the right guitar for it to sound GREAT!:)

Get a Custom or a Distortion in this case!

Re: JB Bummer

The Charvel has 500K pots. I modified my amp and effects settings and managed to squeeze out a little better performance, but still not what I'm looking for. I think I'll try the Duncan Dist..

I have the pick-up close to the strings as the installation guide specifies. Those magnets have to be cutting sustain that close to the strings. Could this affect lack of pinch harmonics?

Why is it Music stores don't carry Trembuckers? Guitar Center said 4 to 6 weeks! Even the online places don't have the TB-6 in stock. They make it so hard for me to spend my money;-)
