JB is driving me NUTS!

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Isn't JB + mahogany = Whitesnake more or less? Sykes etc...It's not the fattest tone I can think of but I really like it.

Meh. Not really. But there is more to it than the pickup and the wood. Depending on your amp and playing style, you could make it work just fine.

BTW, Piggy has been here under a number of guises. (S)He tires of us, deletes her/his account, then reincarnates and is welcomed back by all. (S)He has been here a number of years despite her/his "join date" as LPB.

FTR join date has little to do with knowledge.

Quoting yourself in your own sig?

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

I see the JB as a pickup that's roughly centered on the spectrum between blues/vintage/classic rock and tight, aggressive modern metal. Players who steer hard to one side probably aren't going to like it. Saying it's a bad pickup because it doesn't excel at the extremes is like saying a garden rake is a bad tool because it makes such a lousy shovel.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Yeah...there are actually a number of us that were on the "old" board before this one.

Yeah I think I joined around at the end of 2003 (maybe october or so) when it was still the green/black board....And I was still following closely when it changed to this blue/black on March 2004. I remember waiting sometime so they have it ready to login etc... It was Dave Lee Lynch who first answered my very first question here and got me into the Custom. My nickname back then was Fretburn (?) if I remeber right...

Yep it worked really good with my brother's guitar. Very close to that sound. And also with my RG...really close.

edit: Ok wait after 10 years I got my 4th star!!!! LOL!

I love it when posts go awry. Especially when some that complain about their unnecessary length continue to add to them ;)

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

"Practice cures most tone issues" Archer is correct ! I have been chasing tone for over 30 years. Thought I had it all figured out until my Gibsons were stolen and I bought a new strat :-0

The person who should be taking all credit would be John Suhr :p

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

I had a jb jr in a bridge of an american made strat that sounded a bit shrill but then i changed the pot values from 500k to 250k and it sounded fuller to me.

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

Either put in some Seth Lovers/APS-2/Slash Sig Set or remove the magnets and put in Alnico 2's...

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

If the OP is still around...

I've got a very similar guitar (ESP Eclipse II Aged Honey Burst) with the same pickup set.

The first thing I did was dial in the setup and make sure the strings weren't too close or too far away.

The next thing I did was replace the crappy metal film cap with an Orange drop. I run my tone control on about 7 these days and it did make a difference.

However, the JB in particular doesn't really seem to be a good fit. I have a love/hate relationship with that pickup but only because it sounds good in specific guitars for specific things.

The '59 I'm much happier with but I could use a tad less boominess and slightly softer highs.

I was thinking of putting a RCA5 magnet in the '59 to smooth and even it out, and I might replace the JB with an Antiquity JB (which I find to be much nicer sounding and more refined than a standard new production JB) or even a Brobucker, which I've heard wonderful things about. I'm getting more into the Hot-PAF thing which makes me tend towards the latter, but that's my thoughts on the subject.

Let me know what you decide to do!

Re: JB is driving me NUTS!

I <3 the JB.
I find it to be versatile.
I use it in mahogany guitars.
Half the mahogany guitars I've put a JB in sounded a fizzy mess, the other half sounded wonderful.

Try adjusting the pick-up height before giving up on them.
The pickup models you mentioned all sound like good options, also consider Pearly Gates or Whole Lotta Humbuckers.
