JB issues replacement

Ok I got a JB in my LP custom and it is cool but very flabby low end on the low notes, mush. compared to my SH-14 the JB is loose sounding. Love lead tone though!

Was thinking of Rebel Yells (there lower output though), Doug Alrich (anyone try these?) or somethig new?

I like Alnico5 because of open tone but JB is to loose.

Re: JB issues replacement

Depending on how old your jb is, it may have an A2 in it. Maybe you should try and buy an A5 and swap the magnets before you change pups.

BTW, I spoke with MJ on this (A2 JB) only to find out that the older jbs had A2 mags and also FWIW, Seymour uses A2s in his jbs (heard it from the man himself)

I had the same problem with my old strat. Its a really warm mellow guitar and the JB was flabby as hell on rythm tones.I swapped it out for a DiMarzio Super and that was way tighter and the guitars overtones ring out clearer.
I put the JB in my frankenstrat which sounded really muddy so I wired it out of phase and that helped the lowend a bit.
Might try that befor you buy a pup.

Re: JB issues replacement

maybe a hybrid of the 2? I did it and i love it. You get the vocal mids and the hair of the JB, plus the fullness and tightness of the c5. Booyah

I've always wanted to do this.....make 2 hybrids out of a C-5 and JB. I wonder if it'd bridge the gap?

Do what??? seriously???? Is this what makes them magical?

Not to hijack, but....Are you kidding me?

I've heard clips of the A2 JB and the lead tone sounds outstanding. I bet the low end flub would be worse though...since I have extras, maybe I'll try an A2 in one of mine just for giggles. How tough are mag swaps?

For the OP, the Full Shred is tight as it gets with high levels of distortion, IMO. It actually tends to get tighter as the gain is increased. I don't care much for the rhythm tone of the pup, but the lead tone sounds great: tight and defined yet big.

That's always been my whole love/hate relationship with the JB as well. I love the way it sounds on leads, but it's just so flabby sounding to me on rhythms.
