JCM800 combo on a budget?

Is there such a thing?

It doesn't necessarily need to sound exactly like one.... just a good, fat sounding tube combo. 50w or less preferred.

Re: JCM800 combo on a budget?

Does it have to be EL34? Go to a shop and crank up a Classic 30. Try some kinda boost in front of it. Awesome. It's got a good amount of mids. Real fat sounding.

Re: JCM800 combo on a budget?

The Traynor Blue combo is supposed to have a nice JCM800-esque sound from what I've heard. It's 50 watts, EL34s, and has a Celestion Vintage 30 stock.

Chris: Look around for a Sovtek Mig.

The 50H and 100H were JCM 800ish and the Mig 60 was like a hotter JCM 800. The 50 and 100 watters ran 5881/6L6's and there are 2 versions of each, There is a 50H and a 50 and a 100H and a 100, the H is for High Gain and they are easy to spot because they have master volumes while the normal 50 and 100 do not. There was also a 1x12 combo of the 50H which is a killer small amp...I tried one once that had a single Celestion Vintage 30 in it and it was a great amp. The 50H is often refered to as a Midget 50 becuase is was a very small head...those sit PEFERCT on the short side of a 2x12 Bassman cab and sound amazing through one!

Re: JCM800 combo on a budget?

I knew I should have bought a JCM 800 combo a few years ago when they were still in the $450-$650 range...sheesh

The sovtek's are supposed to be totally cool amps. Haven't played one myself, but heard a few guys playing them and they sound killer!

Re: JCM800 combo on a budget?

I'm not too hung up on any one type of tube or anything.... basically something 50 watts or less, that sounds really fat, with one 12".

Re: JCM800 combo on a budget?

The Traynor is a little high, price wise. The Laney & Sovtek are looking pretty cool though. Seems like somebody was trying to tell me about Sovtek Migs a few years ago.
