Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

Hello everyone and sorry for ''reviving'' this thread. I have been researching new wah pedals online since I feel my 535w wah ain't doing it for me anymore.

I have been researching options like the Dimebag, Cantrell, CAE MC-404 pedal, and even the discontinued Slash wah pedal. I would like a more vocal wah with cut, a boost and a LED would really be a plus. For all you Cantrell wah users.

How has been your experience so far?

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

its aweesome!! I have done some recordings with it - "Savior of the Mind" etc

no LED though. i bet th slash or dimebag would not be that bad tho.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

I still like mine. It's a pretty throaty sounding voice. They have the sweep dialled in really well IMO.

It's hardwired for ~20dB gain. No LED (not sure why you'd need one).

I've toyed with the idea of wiring an LED into my 535Q just for the sake of being able to tell at a glance whether it's on or not.

I like my 535Q a lot and it does get me that Satriani-esque "whoah" sound in the lower register but sometimes I wish I had a simpler wah. Could the Cantrell wah get that sound too?

That's good to know! Are your recording online. I would like to hear it in action.

So it has an extra 20db gain inside? Does that means I don't need the boost the 535q has?
About the LED... sometimes I don't know if the pedal is on or off. I would really appreciate something telling me that. I really do a lot of pedal tapping at my gigs*

I'm wondering the same thing too. I would really like a more vocal wah. I prefer the wah trebley sounds too the bass sounds it can provide. I feel the 535q has a limited range for that, and I had it for 3-4 years now*

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

Im gonna have to check the JC wah. I hated my bad horsie and am using a vox now. still seems too high endy (word?) for my ear. I tore it down and roll the pot up some and its better, but still not what I hear in my head. (besides the voices...)

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

here is one that I use the wah heavily on: https://soundcloud.com/earthalliance/backmasked

Thanks for your kindness! That's an excellent demo playing you do there. Very professional!
I like that type of wah sound. Sadly I don't know how it will fit for a player that plays a lot of genres pop, rock, blues, latin, reggae, etc.
I need something versatile for different needs.

Best way I can think to describe it is that it's really resonant in the heel down position rather than dull/muffled. If you listen to the intro to Dirt (the song) is sounds just like that.

The Cantrell doesn't necessarily have the widest sweep (there's wahs that have more treble and/or bass), but the entirety of the sweep (IMO) is all sweet spot with no dead spots. I like a throaty, laid back wah that produces a sort of howling sound mid sweep and in the JC I've found it... But if I were looking for more screaming, in your face tone I'd look for something else.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

Your info about the Dunlop bypass is not correct, if it says "hardwire bypass", it's the older tone-sucking bypass, and if it says "true hardwire bypass", it's really true bypass. There is a document in the Dunlop "Blog" section that explains their bypass options, and lists all of the pedals that they produced when the article was written, and tells you if it really is true bypass or not. Some pedals changed to true bypass at some point during their manufacture, and they note that. Their bypass descriptions are confusing, because they used to use the "hardwire bypass" phrase as a feature, when it was really non-true bypass and sucked tone. So they added the "true hardwire bypass" thing when they started actually making some pedals true bypass. The Bonamassa wah has selectable true bypass or buffered bypass, so you can choose which sounds best to you.

Al

If you're talking the ones with micro-componants the only one I have experience with the Dime wah. It's not TB and the buffer is on all the time, but the buffer in it is good. That said, it needs to be properly buffered due to the dual outputs.

As for the bypass, in my experience if Dunlop says they're true bypass they actually are. If they say they're "True Hardwire Bypass" then it's the old school type with a bit of tone suck. The trick with these hardwire bypass pedals is that they only exhibit tone suck if unbuffered, so if you have a buffer anywhere in the chain before one of these pedals you'll have no issues with them.

This sounds like what Id like, but Id still like to be able to get the 70s wocka wocka sound too..

The CAE Wah has all the features you listed and also has two settings. I think you would like the red fasel setting the most. I'm not sure how similar or different it sounds compared to the Cantrell Wah but I like my CAE wah. I spend most of my time on the yellow fasel setting which like the standard crybaby but not as tinny.

Thanks for the comment! While I may hold the purchase a little bit longer, I really want to upgrade from the 535q. That CAE really looks like a strong contender to me. I hate the fact that some of the online reviews of the pedal aren't very detailed or good sounding.

Re: Jerry Cantrell Wah Review

Another necro, sorry about that but I need to know if this pedal can be powered by Truetone 1 Spot adapter?
