I've got JJ's in my Marshall MkIII head and they sound great. No problems at all. Try them in your MkIII combo, see if you get the same behavior there.
thanks eric - yeah the MKIII now has all JJs pre and power (cos i stole the EH tubes from the preamp and put them in my twin after all the issues with meltdowns and noise). And yeah it does sound really good- better than ever in fact. Thats the problem! To me, JJs sound excellent, but im not sure about their reliability anymore.

I wouldn't question any manufacturer over one bad batch of tubes. I've had problematic batches from just about every tube manufacturer over the years; none seem immune from issues and none seem overly problematic.
People seem to pigeon-hole certain tubes into a certain sound as though everyone will have the same experience with them. Every amp behaves differently with different tubes and even two identical amps with identical tubes but different players will sound different...sometimes very different! My shop gear gets played by a lot of different people and I can safely say that every person sounds unique even at the same amp settings and guitar. My tone has way more midrange than most others...at the same settings, playing the same riff. String gauge makes a big difference too. Sometimes its not that the tube is wrong...its just not right with the current setup.
JJ's can sound muddy in any particular amp if you are heavy handed or play heavy strings...at the same time, a Chinese tube can sound thin and lifeless if you play light strings and have more delicate touch.
aha. i play light and my amps are fat and clean. Thanks for chiming in glassman. So you reckon if i like the sound of jj pres get a then maybe i should stick with them and hope i dont get a bad batch again? You reckon the bad batch could be manufacturing or transport issues?
