JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

Does anyone see an advantage to losing the presence control in favor of a post phase inverter Master Volume? Or do you lose the purity that is has going for it? I just don't think in my personal opinion that it needs a MV. If you need low level grind, put a fulldrive2 in front of it. Or the new SFX03? :naughty:

Scott, you heard my frankinstrat (59, JB, PhatCat on steroids) and know better than anyone else how NICE that combo sounded while driven at 12db +....

I don't believe that I need a Fulldrive2 driving this amp to get the tone I need with that guitar and still I can play clean with the frankinjaguar (1/4 lbs pups in that guitar)

And if I really want sweet ear music, then it's a EJ Strat or Les Paul - dependent on the tune that being played.

Got a lot of tunes to upload, after conversion into MP3 - Of course, you'll have to listen to my poor playing :naughty:

Scott....do you HAVE to lose the presence to get a post PI MV? With the announcement of the new SD pedal, I'd be a lot more interested in an Edana if it had a MV.

Re: JTM45's might be the perfect single channel amps...

After playing my cousin's JTM45ri I didn't find a need for a MV. I just cranked it and worked the Vol. knob on my guitar like I've always done with any Non MV amp. That amp sounded so good, Even with the crappy stock sovtek 5881's in it and a old crappy peavey alnico speaker. I can just Imagine how much better the Edena must sound in compairson. When he took that JTM back... It left me with Major Marshall G.A.S. I never got to Gig with the JTM, I guess that would be the true test to see if it needs a MV. As a mater of fact I was useing a A/B switch with it. Bright channel on 10 normal to taste? It did get pretty loud with both channels bridged. But I doubt it would be to loud to blow out the band?

In my opinion based on what I've read, a MV on this amp goes counter to it's whole personality. I think the JTM sound comes from the whole package - tube recto, output-stage clipping, preamp gain, all working together.

If someone wants less volume with one of these babies, just use an attenuator. Or, look into a 6V6 version (easy rebias and a bit of mucking around with speaker impedance). There are TMB versions of the 18 Watter that might come close to the JTM sound as well.

Keep in mind that I haven't built my JTM clone yet, so this is all just book-learning.
