Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

Not a fan of the TS. Just squashes the hell out of whatever you run through it. It's got that mid-hump and that awful compression.

If I were trying to sound like Stevie Ray, it would be indispensable.

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

Here's something to try for those that want to "open" up their Tubescreamers. Swap the clipping diodes for 1N4001 diodes. At the same time, change up the tone circuit to match that of the Boss SD-1. Changing the tone circuit will also help tame down some of the mid hump.

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

First i have to get the pedal then i`ll think about the mod after!!! *lol*

I checked out the Bad Monkey,it was ok but nowhere near the the quality in sound and construction as the Ibanez imo!
Basically, from what I understand John Spina mod brings TS9 closer to TS808, note makes it a TS808 a lot closer to it. One of the greates point of referances for TS808 is George Lynch. I hated it my TS9 for years it just sat in the box then I sent to John, and I was blown away. Wether its Under the Lock and Key or Wicked sensation its TS808, people keep talking about plexis, alder body guitars and DD or screaming demon pups, but TS808 always stayed while amps and pups came and went. John Spina's mod makes it really easy to fake the Lynch thing especially his typical alternation of pick harmonics and palm mutes in "box" blues pentatonic licks.

Here how it started for me.

I`ve heard great things about the Analog Man mod as well!

I love my modded TS9, it smokes. Mine is a Keeley mod TS9, and I'd highly recommend getting one. If you search the bay, you can get one used for the same price as a new TS9 from GC, that's how I did it. Normally the keeley mod ts9s are like 200, which imo is totally ridiculous. The spina modded TS9s are supposed to be badass too, I honestly don't think you can go wrong either way.

Always appreciate the nice plugs from you buddy! Your modded TS is beyond an 808,in that it's capable of more gain, has stronger lows, less midrange hump, smoother, more sustain etc.....I don't just do the 2 resistor and chip changes when I Mod any of the Tube Screamers....Your pedal has alot more going on than an 808 buddy! I use the best components that I can fit on the circuit board and tweak values that please my own ears!

A stock 808 can not compete with one of the modded Tube Screamers!

Keeley is a great guy! His mods are almost double the price....I Mod for the hobby...

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

lol, i had no idea you were john spina. thats awesome. one of my ts9s i modded myself via the monte allums kit and i have to admit im pretty happy with it. removing the chip was a real pain though.

ill understand if you dont want to get into this, but is there any major differences between your mod and montes?

OOp sorry, now I am even more happier. I might talk to you nex year about either another TS or as i've recently found out you have a mod for a MXR Dist+. THanks again bro.

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

The TS808, 10, 9 and 5 only differ by at the most 6 or 8 components... There really isn't that huge a difference between them, in particular the 9 and 808, at least on paper. And if I recall well most changes are on the buffer...

I don't like TS at all. The gain is boxy and nasal, can be shrill and thin... meeh. Not my idea of an OD at all.

However with the gain down and the level up, it tightens up a sound nicely and helps it cut.

For bedroom playing I'd have no use for one, same as a standalone OD. For boosts I prefer a more linear type, so that's the TS out as well.

The initial change from changing out the 2 output resistors and the opamp is a no-brainer! It's the other mods that you or myself figure into the equation to get the great end resulting tone! It's like we both bake a cake, use our own ingredients and then a person decides on what they like better?

I do alot more than just the TS9 to 808 mods when I do any Tube Screamer, plus I've been doing these mods almost as long as Analog Mike! I used to sell a ton of modded TS5s when E Bay first came along! Seriously!

I Must stress again that it's how and what you do inside of the pedal and trusting your own ears and not what's on the schematic only, that matters to me most!

The midrange hump that everyone hates is easy to take care of if you know how and where to change it....I've been inside more than 100 Tube Screamers and that's not including alot of the TS clones....

I have my own mod ideas, don't copy, and so I can't compare my mods to anyone else's mods? All of the musicians within my circle, have pedals that I've modded for them! LOL...It only takes 1 guitar player to tell someone else about how good his pedal is....Then it spreads from there...

It's just a hobby that I enjoy, but I do like to squash some of the "hype" and voodoo BS behind the Tube Screamer pedal...

Yeah I wish I had the patience to do that :( I use Monte Allum's set on the SD1 with a couple of my own changes and it's just fine for me. One day though I'll build a simplified TS as a test bench with socketed opamps, gain resistors and signal path caps/resistors until I get it just right. It's expensive though :(

Anyway the opamp and clipping diodes are, as has been suggested, the first thing I change in a TS style pedal. The TL072 is my favorite though I only tried the 4558D, DD and P (all junk to me, though the P was slightly better. Keep in mind the difference a single different opamp isn't HUGE, but it's there). I also use 1N4001s, or 2s depending on what I have. Same things.
I also use SD1s, not TS pedals. Way cheaper and the circuit is pretty much there already so why not.
Anyway out of these the diode choices and the opamps are the only things I chose myself after trial and error. But it was worth it. Oh on my latest SD1 I kept the assymetrical clipping and used a random GE diode :D

The biggest tone difference I do is a blue LED. That gives it all its coolness muahah.

(just joking)

Either way it's honestly not THAT hard if you understand very basic electronics to figure out which elements make a difference. Simply identify the signal path on the schematics. It does take a bit of learning and reading around though.

i didnt mean to imply you copied his ideas at all...if you have been doing them aslong as analog mike then he probably copied you if anything, lol.

i was just curious as to whether you were familiar with his mod and had any comments on whether it could be made even better iyo

I Learned by looking at the schematics and then just trial and error within key parts of the circuit...For instance(I Look at it like this)....Tone control/tone stack,opamp,gain,etc...If there was a certain aspect of a pedal that I wanted to change,I'd change out a cap, diode, resistor value etc..,go plug into my amp,and see if it satisfied me.....I din't have "anyone" at the time I started goofing with stuff,to tell me what to change or how to change it...I learned on my own TS9,but I was also tweaking my own Boss pedals...After awhile I really started getting a decent grip on how I felt these pedals should sound(with my setup)....You also have to make sure that the pedal you mod today, will work for that person next year and so on!

So many people do this stuff and we all have our own ideas....I Just know what works for me and I'm glad that alot of forum members have posted back to me telling me they like the modded versions of their pedals!

Still a great hobby and I make a few honest bucks pleasing other players!

It's all good brother....I didn't imply that you thought I copied anyone else's mods....I was just saying that I don't know about the other mods because I mod my own pedals! Mike didn't copy any of my mods....I don't think? ;o)

I'm sure I'm doing more changes inside of my TS mods....I think Mike initially was putting the reissue TS9s back to 808 specs via 2 resistors and the opamp....Later he started offering "dark" and "brown" mods...This is just changing cap values and or using carbon comp resistors in key places to warm the tone up...Again...no big deal once you know the circuit..

Re: Juat tried an Ibanez TS9 Tube Screamer....WOW!!

Wow...this is some heavy stuff, all this mod talkin!! *lol* I`ll be happy just to get the stock TS9 for starters, then i`ll work on getting the mods done. Great stuff though guys....very informative!

Might be best to get a TS9 first! LOL :naughty::bling::1:

Just did another one for 51501984 forum brother Rich...
