Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

I bought this guitar kit because it is on sale and I don't own an SG. I have owned Stew Mac necks and bodies and felt that the quality is there. Has anyone here bought a Stew Mac guitar kit and how do you feel about it? Anyone have any experience with Stew Mac guitar kits?

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

I don't but I wanna see in-process pics.

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

I have been a loyal StewMac customer for many years. StewMac has lots of good stuff. Usually what they sell is really good quality (but admittedly overpriced). I would expect their kits are good and pretty complete with easy to follow instructions. Years ago I was tempted to buy one of their guitar kits, but I decided to build a couple LPs and Strats from scratch instead. Now that I build custom guitars I have no desire to build a standard popular style guitar from a kit or from scratch.

I think these kits would be a great way for you to start building guitars. Yes I used the plural form of the word because, as you'll find out, building is very addictive but very fulfilling. This will probably NOT be your only build.

I have wanted to buy one of their amp kits just for the knowledge and experience I could gain from putting it together. I never considered them a good value as an amp per se...I could easily find similar used amps at much less cost than their kits. But it may be a good way for me to become more familiar with how an amp works (other than just understanding the different tubes). Maybe one day when I can justify the expense.

I agree with the others. I would love to see pics and read narratives of your progress along the way.
Congrats on the acquisition and good luck. If you need any help or advice as you go, don't hesitate to ask. Most of us have been there done that and have lots of experience and helpful knowledge.

The sale price on those makes it a very good deal .

Echoing what 'doc says, kits are most often a lead in to scratch building for the more adventurous.
However the kit is essentially an exercise in the finishing process, and of course assembly. You can also learn the techniques of guitar setup into the bargain.

Thank you gentlemen, I know first hand about the building guitar addiction as I have many Warmoth builds, a few Edenhaus partscasters, 2 GFS builds and a few prototype homemade builds. I usually use Seymour Duncan pickups and higher quality parts and this new acquisition will be no different. Even store bought guitars are not safe from my customization and modding habits. I also own a 2012 Gibson Les Paul Supreme that has been heavily modded, Seymour Duncan 59/JB gold covers, gold metal surrounds, gold brass roller bridge and brass tailpiece, Schaller strap locks and gold metal pickup selector switch tip, vintage style control knobs and Optima 24k gold strings.

Stew Mac stuff is quality.

On the rare occasion I've had any issue, they've taken care of me too. They have available humans to support you and make it right.

I’ve also been a customer of them for a long time. Probably since the mid 80s.

Some of their stuff is a bit high, but that’s often stuff they don’t make. And of course these days there’s lots of copy cats.

I bought a fret wire bender from them 30 years ago for about $80. It’s served me well all these years. And the new version looks even nicer.
They invented that thing. Now you can find knockoffs cheaper, but will that maker be around in another 30 years? [emoji2]

Awesome man that body looks almost neck thru

Dying to see how the new one turns out

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

You have the all brass GFS wrap around bridge, how do you like it?

I like it a lot. I prefer the GFS over the TonePros wraparound bridge that I also own. I am using the locking studs from the TonePros bridge.

The guitar kit has just been delivered. Here is what it looks like.

Will the different colored wood appear if I use my planned cherry red lacquer paint?

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

Is that a mahogany body and what wood is the fret board?

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

The body is mahogany and the fretboard is granadilla.

I thought maybe the FB was Pau Ferro or something. That Granadilla is very light. Do you plan to stain it for a different effect?

I will probably oil the fretboard, or add a stain in the oil.

Re: Just Bought A Stew Mac SG Style Guitar Kit...............................

Are you gonna stain the body, too?
