Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Gearjoneser

Gear Ho
As soon as I'd seen it online, I knew I wanted one, or at least try one out.

I just saw one of the first ones shipped to Sam Ash, and I plugged in a black Custom Classic LP into a Blackstar halfstack, with a bunch of the Sam Ash staff standing around. I ran it through it's paces, and besides being stunningly beautiful, it also sounded great.

I started doing requests, from the Michael Schenker cokked wah sound, to Jimi, to funk, etc. All of it sounded really nice. I didn't plan on buying anything today, mostly because I've got a few gear sales pending, so I just put $35 down on the $170 + tax total.

I can't wait to get it. I asked them to sell the one I demoed and order me an untouched one. The logo area has very delicate paint, and the one I tried had a scratch that bugged me.

For years, I used a Budda Bud Wah, and then a Fulltone Clyde Deluxe, which I plan on keeping. When I get the Dunlop Bonamassa Wah, I'll decide if it's booting the Fulltone off my board, or if I'll keep it minty and used sparingly. I'll know once I've got them side by side. This pedal kicks ass though. It's got sort of a 'wow' as opposed to 'wah.'

I almost wish I could get the Bonamassa Fuzz Face too, just to have the matching copper set. Unless they make a ton of them, these won't ever go down in value, and are likely to be long term collectibles.

It looks to be made better than most Dunlop wah pedals.

That pedal is so beautiful man, congrats! Let me know how you like it against the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. I've had my Clyde for a long time and I love it to death - just wondering how the Bonamassa wah stacks up (I'm predicting it'll sound better with 'buckers).

Fuzz Face looks so sweet too. With today's standards though, the fuzz face's size makes it a bit impractical/pedalboard unfriendly. Still, would love to try one of them too for sound! Good luck bud!

I like the look and sound of the Dunlop FF's, and I use the blue Jimi version on my board. The bummer isn't the size, but the 9 volt battery requirement.
I've always got to remember to unplug the cable. I've accidentally drained quite a few batteries because of that. Even the new Bonamassa Fuzz is battery only.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Nice congrats! Im gassin hard for both the wah and fuzz. Been contemplating trading my bc108 sunface for his fuzz, but I have no real reaason to haha.... just really wanna try it!

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

One interesting feature is the internal switch, for true bypass or non TBP.
In non true bypass, it shaves a tiny bit of highs, like the old Crybaby wahs, which Bonamassa prefers. I'll probably use it in hardwired true bypass mode.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Ah, cool. So it's more prone to wear and developing a road personality. I like.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

If you look at the prototypes Joe uses, they've had the brushed copper finish, just like my second picture. The production models are shiny. But that finish looks like it'll patina pretty quickly. It looks great in person. With the halo inductor, and it's perfect voicing, they didn't go for any other features.

This wah and my Clyde Deluxe will probably be the last wah's I buy. I'm curious to see how close the Clyde Deluxe gets to it's sound, but from what I've heard in demoing, it's a sound that's not like the Shaft, Jimi, and Whacked settings on the Fulltone. I'm hoping that's very evident when I bring the Dunlop home.

Joe, have you tried the Cantrell Wah? If so, how does it compare to the Bonamassa?

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Thats a gorgeous wah, inside and out! I will await your "at home" review!

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

whoah there isn't surface mount stuff in there.

Yeah, I almost assumed the circuit board would look more mass produced, but I'm glad to see the nicer components in it. It looks closer to how they used to be made.

I actually drive past the old Thomas Organ location everyday - the place where old Cry Baby pedals were made. But it's not Sepulveda Ca. anymore. They changed the name of the city to North Hills. I think there's a Fedex there now.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Looking forward to your back to back review GJ, it's a great looking pedal.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Cool. They definitely went with a higher quality PCB and components for this one ... and is that a Halo inductor? It's definitely not the stock Crybaby inductor or a Fasel.

Re: Just bought the Bonamassa Wah

Cool. I figured out how to sound like JB on my Valvetronix. Now I can sound even more like him.
