Just purchased EastWest SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ...

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
By trying to keep true to my goal for 2k6 and become more MIDI-savvy, I purchased some symphonic orchestra samples yesterday. (I started out last month with a new version of Cubase and Drumkit From Hell) This is mostly for demoing new songs and to expand my learning base in the studio. I am also working on some new material for my band's next CD, and I would like to liberate the synth lines a bit from playing on a guitar synth/pedal tones. (As much as I love using pedal synths and will continue to use em to beef up song structures)

While not replacing a real orchestra, of course, I must say that the samples are top notch. What really suprised me is the quality of the softer-played passages, besides the bombastic stuff.

I have begun tearing through the Score Editor tutorial in Cubase, and should have a sample up sometime tonight/tomorrow morning. (I'm so glad I know how to read and write music!! :) )

If anyone has done any orchestral MIDI stuff, I would love to hear what you've done!!

so THAT's the link you sent me .. yesterday?

i couldnt quite come out on top of it wtf you were trying to show me, apart of orchestra arrangements.. now it makes sense.. looking forward to it man =)

Re: Just purchased EastWest SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ...

I would like to learn more about using midi in recordings. What sound card are you using?

Adding orchstra sound is something I would love to be able to do - but I really don't understand how. Currently I write the parts in Finale - export them as a midi file - then import them into Cakewalk. They sound okay but they don't have the dynamics and overtones I would really like.

I don't know if I need a better sound card (I have an Audigy) - or I've heard about sound fonts - but I am generally ignorant.

Hey dood.

I WILL get around to sending you my copy of Reason for you to try out :)

Re: Just purchased EastWest SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ...

My soundcard is nothing special; in fact, it's the off-the-shelf POS one that came with my PC. In fact, my PC is woefully out of date, as well. I would like to get a new PC this year, as well, but that remains to be seen.

In the meanwhile, here's a quick clip that I made: it's very mundane, and only 30 seconds long, but you can hear the quality of the samples. I only used a couple of violins, cellos, and some brass instruments; I didn't have the gumption to try to mock something up with the FULL orchestra (basoons, contra basoons, various clarinets, french horn, etc)

Really cool, the clip had a real medieval vibe to it, perfect for the music you play.

Heh, thanx. It was not a performance demo, by any means, just shows a smidge of the sounds at your disposal with the software.

Now that I've got the idea I want to work up green-lighted, I'm going to start using it right away in this new tune ... should be interesting!

Re: Just purchased EastWest SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ...

Hahahah soon your drummer will be playing to a click track!

Re: Just purchased EastWest SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ...

I've never used any of the eastwest stuff but I used digital performer for my midi stuff. I <3 DP even though its almost too complicated for what I need it for. I really dig the Vienna Symphonic Orchestra samples and the Spectrasonics Symphony of Voices samples. I havn't heard anything better sample-wise than those two.
