Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

So what did I do wrong? Two cables worked and 2 did not. I tried retrimming the very ends, thinking the contact surfaces were not flush, but no good. Did I do something wrong with screwing in the set screw too hard???

Best thing to do is check them with an ohmmeter for both continuity and leakage. You may have tightened them too much...or not enough. Usually the Planet Waves cables are pretty reliable, but they will fail if over-stressed.

Planet Waves cables are crap. I recommend some Bespeco (at low cost) or Fender ones. I always look for cables which are easy to get to input jacks in order to repair them.

Short answer..."Yes".

Be meticulous about doing each step perfectly. When you cut the cable, make sure it is a clean cut with no stray insulation wires that can short things when you put it together. This is by far the most important step.

When you put the cable into the connector, make sure you are centered so that the pin in the connector goes into the lead wire of the cable.

I don't think you can screw the top on too tightly (if you have followed the instructions correctly).

My experience with George L's:

"Hmm, let's build some patch cords..."
*clip*
*insert*
*screw*
...Repeat other side
*Plug in*

"Of course these garbage solder less cables wouldn't work! I'm an idiot for thinking otherwise!

*googles how to fix non-working George L's*

I know the planet waves system is different than George L's, but the concept is the same. You really have to think what you are doing electrically and be smart about your assembly. For the George L's, if the cable isn't perfectly round after you cut, the shield will short out to hot. (What happened to me) Make sure for your cables the cuts are perfectly perpendicular to the cable, with no scraps protruding. Roll the cable in your fingers to restore the roundness and carefully insert the cable so the center conductor makes contact with the area it is supposed to. Finally, tighten (which pierces the jacket to ground the shield and complete the circuit.

I became much more meticulous and the rest of the cables worked fine. I know the design is a little different on Planet Waves, but the same attention to detail will pay dividends.

Alrighty, I went back and got one to work. Can you guys explain this for a guy who is blind? I can not functionally see for this task and just thought all I had to do was clip the wire, make sure each end is flush and then I could insert the plug end/jack in any direction I wantand just tighten down the screw... I am interested in the step about the lead wire inside the cable? Please explain this a little more.

Re: Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

Just make sure its a clean cut, try not to 'squeeze' the cable either.

I have used 2 of these kits with no problems...had to redo a few like yourself on first attempt but no biggie. Also, don't listen to czarokrates. :)

I mean the "plumbed" cables like the planet waves or die hard don't have easy access to soldering part, in case of any troubles with the jacks you can easily change them or resolder.

Re: Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

I have horked up some George L's cables by over tightening the screw.
I am not familiar with Planet Waves system but if it's similar. Then that's the problem

Re: Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

Also, a little twist of the cable while inserting will help seat the center conductor.

^.

Yes, that's always a good thing to do. Thanks for mentioning it, I forgot to.

Re: Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

Its why i dont bother with solderless plugs. Planet waves has them or did on their circuit breaker cables as well. I do use their american stage cables, like those since their shield/ground is in wire mesh/net form & made of aluminium too i think, i have stomped on them, tripped on them, dropped them, still no problems over a year of use. The shield format also helps in preventing any noise being picked up when the cable is bumped into anything.

Their classic series is also good but i still prefer the other line. They do sell bulk cable, which can be used for custom lengths with aftermarket plugs.

Re: Just used planet waves cable kit: some cables worked, some didnt???

Dont feel bad.I bought a 3 pack of their pre-made patch cables and 1 was DOA and the other two were noisy and buzzy.. Sent em back. Got another 3 pack. Ok at first. 2 dead within 6 month. 3rd sounds like rice crispies-Snap, Crackle, POP! Tossed em. Bought cheap hosas, been working fine for a year.

Had one of those kill switch cables that crapped out within a few months too. I had forgot my experience with that when I bought my patch cables.

All of their accessory products have been very hit or miss for me. Picks, cleaners, cables, string winders, etc. I think Dad should stick to strings.
