JVM vs. JCM800 vs. Jubilee

Hi guys. Looking for new Marshall head and JVM 410, JCM 800 and Jubilee are the same price (actually jubilee is about 100$ cheaper but cab is more expensive if I want it to match). JVM is very versatile as far as I know and other too are just freakin loud or something?

Not to be rude but its kinda like asking... Do I want Orange Sherbert, Rocky Road, or Mint Chocolate chip ice cream. All 3 are ice cream, all 3 are fantastic...IF thats what you want.


They all sound different so choose the one that is the sound you are after. If you need versatility go with the JVM as its the only one that is. But being you are even considering the other 2 I would guess that you dont need versatility cause they are the antithesis of versatile. If you need multiple easily swapable gain channels and dont want to have to use pedals you have one choice.

I have a Jubilee reissue and think I can tell you a lot about all three amplifiers. It's kind of a different beast but that's difficult to put into words. It is warmer than a JCM800 and the higher gain modes of the JVM. The Jubilee and JCM800 have about the same amount of gain but there is a difference in the dynamics, so a JCM800 you could say has an easier feel which makes it seem like it has a little more gain and a Jubilee has a chewy dynamic. OK I'm going to say this whether it makes any sense technically or not: the Jubilee relies more on the power section but a JCM800 has a more aggressive preamp. I don't know if that even makes sense but a Jubilee needs more volume to get good, and that could be the reason why Marshall put a 1/2 power switch on it. A JCM800 roars when it's loud too but seems to me as if it is a little more manageable. This probably does not get talked about enough but the JCM800 reissue has low input that most people seem to overlook. In whatever way the input is attenuated or lessened seems to subtly tame the edge a little in a way that it's smoother kind of like a Jubilee. You can get very nice low and medium gain tone using a JCM800 that way. The Jubilee is very special but not everyone's taste which I think is why the people who love it rave about it and others don't get it.

To tell you about the JVM well it is a popular amp but the boutique people talk about it as if it is a modeling amp or something. It lacks absolutely nothing in comparison to any classic Marshall as far as I am concerned but in all honesty the reverb they gave does make it sound processed. I developed some weird attachment to Jubilee sbut I will say the JVM is my favorite Marshall. It's loud but gives you better tone in low volume applications than either Jubilee or JCM800.

There is a device you can find called a Koch Load box or something. I tried various attenuation products with the JCM800 but the Load Box stands out among them all. I couldn't begin to tell you how it is different from the other attenuators on the market. All I know is that it works better than any other that I have experience with. I would recommend that if you get a JCM800.

1 pics prove nothing I can post pics too, People have no idea if they are actually yours of what you have done with it. Maybe you borrowed it from your friend bob and took some snaps of it.

Even then you left out pics of your JCM 800 that you are comparing it too.

Your tonal descriptions do not fit. If your JCM800 has more gain than your Jubilee something is wonky. That simple.

Ha ha ha ha ha! So now you think my pics are fakes. LOL! I guess even if I posted the receipt that would be suspect too. LMAO! Hey try checking your facts little guy. I never said the JCM800 has more gain. I said they were about the same or at least feel like it. If you think my tonal descriptions do not fit then by all means enlighten me with your vast experience and elaborate, or you could just stop before you make a bigger fool of yourself.

(rhetorical questions don't need answers) Unless you are trying to start a contest of random amp porn off the net then I still would like to read in more detail how my assessment of aforementioned amplifiers is so wrong. Honestly though I think you stepped in it, got called on it, and are now grasping at straws because you can't admit that calling me out backfired. Fortunately for me you are nobody, so I'm done with the courtesy of humoring you now.

Well, how loud (in db or something ) is JCM or jubilee when it starts to break up and how loud with some attenuator?

If you're worried about loud, I wouldn't get a big tube amp. That said, I'd say the JVM depends the least on volume.

There's been some discussions about some of these amps very recently. Make a search and have a look.

Speakers make far more difference in volume than wattage will. When they break up is influenced by many things there is no set standard. 2 identical amps will break up at different volumes of you drop the bias on one of them. (It will sound like pewp but it will break up)

Attenuators are great if you need to trim a bit volume off. So if you need 5 to be as loud as 3 they are great. If you want 8 to be 1.5 they will disappoint

I think yngwiestein confused you some on this too though. Unless you are playing stadiums or outdoor gigs you wont be able to run any 100 watt head up loud. Most of the time I run mine around 2-3.5 and even that is pretty stinking loud.

There will be few times that you will be able to run any 100watt (or even 50 watt for that matter) head at the point of break up.

Back in the day when PA's sucked you needed the on stage wattage, now you dont even need an amp. Now the reason to have a 100 watter isnt to push it into break up (for that get a smaller amp) but for headroom. This is why i use one. Because no 20 watter will push low end and stay tight like my 100 watter will.

If you are really concerned with low volumes I would suggest you get either the JVM or like the YJM100 with the power scaling in it.

^^^ sums up what I wanted to say. I have both, both sound great together too, like having double scoop ice cream(if we want to use the ice cream analogy), in the same cab. I now exclusively use the JVM(modded BTW) and the Jubilee connected into my 1960A cab in Stereo mode.(oh and if you do get a marshall, get a power attenuatior, because you need to push the tubes hot, like, really hot)

EDIT: Read the rest of the thread, on how loud, depends on the speakers you are using. If you get a 100W marshall, you pretty much NEED an attenuatior for it. And one of these amps cost 2500+, don't tell me you can't pony up the $$$ for a 500 dollar attenuator if you get one of these great amps.
