Keep it or send it back?

I bought a mint pickguard on this forum for which there was no picture (shame on me). The seller didn't mention the damage by the neck pocket becuase he thought that's the way they supposed to be. He offered to take it back. Of course I'd be out for shipping both ways.

What would you do? Is there any way to repair this?

Re: Keep it or send it back?

I'm guessing it cost $4 bucks or so to send one way. I'm also guessing that used pickgaurds go for $15 bucks or so. Sounds like a lot of hassle over $7 bucks difference by the time you've paid shipping 2 ways.

Re: Keep it or send it back?

In my opinion, full disclosure should be expected. Seller should refund your $ and if he wants it back cover shipping too.

That's to adjust the truss rod at the heel.

Not hardly. That thing is some kind of buggered thing on a normal pickguard.
IMO, the seller needs to take it back , with shipping paid and an apology, or he's in deep **** with me and probably others here.

Dominus is right. I've seen that kinda thing before. Looks pretty nasty with a three-ply but meh. There's fault both ways on this one but personally I agree with Lucid. It would be too much hassle for me to bother with for a few bucks. Your call, though.

Re: Keep it or send it back?

Really depends on whether or not you can deal with it. A little sanding to clean up the bevel would make that cut out look a little more intentional. It was definitely a DIY job to a normal pickguard, not a pickguard that was designed with that feature in mind, so the seller should have disclosed it either way. Also, not everyone wants or can even use a heel-adjusting truss cut-out on their pickguard. So, again, it's up to you...

If you can deal with it and the seller truly didn't make mention of it, then the seller should at least refund you a couple bucks for the trouble.

If you can't deal with it and the seller really didn't say anything about it, then you have the right to ask for a refund and at least a splitting of return shipping, in my opinion.

All in all, it doesn't sound like the seller is intentionally trying to screw anyone over here and I'm sure he'll work with you, whatever decision you make.

Of course, you could always keep that one as a spare, pay another $7.50 and get a brand new one:

...just a thought ;)

I've seen one *exactly* like that. Unless it's the same one (and it's not, the one I had was parchment), it comes from a repro place like that. It was done at least semi-professionally. If you look at it, you can see that it's even and straight. I've seen home-made ones, those look like they were chipped. This was probably drilled and smoothed out.

While I agree that the pickguard looks like a standard heel-adjustment pickguard, let's be honest. Those guards are few and far-between. Normal expectations for a sight-unseen guard would not include that adjustment area. The seller should take it back and refund shipping (one way). That's how I would handle it.

"I thought it was supposed to be like that" makes it seem like the seller doesn't know guitars, yet he sold this on a guitar forum. A little more savvy is expected from members.

Re: Keep it or send it back?

BTW, if this is being used with a 22-fret neck it probably won't be visible.

Re: Keep it or send it back?

This is settled.

I've learned my lesson and I hope everyone else will too. ALWAYS have/use pictures of items for sale to avoid issues.

I mentioned in his sale ad that I'd be using the guard on a 2008 MIM Strat and that the guard would need to fit that guitar. I did not mention the number of frets.
