kick drum mic

Ok, I have SM57s, SM58s, AKG PL790s and an AKG C3000B. Im gearing up to record live drums but I'm short a kick drum mic.

Any suggestions?

Re: kick drum mic

Just get the Shure Beta 52a. It's low priced & good. Stick it in the B.D., aim it at the beater & fuggedaboutit.

Re: kick drum mic

The Blue BALL will work really well. I got very nice results using minimal mics on a drum kit for a demo - 2x57s as overheads and a BALL on the kick. http://streamer.soundclick.com/jerry_DL/14/01/freemp3/twilightodyssey+watchtowermix6nov05rev2.mp3

The ball is pretty bulletproof so it's great for live use, really gets the attack of the beater down well, and it's a dynamic mic so it can take serious SPLs. The only downside is that you need phantom power for it, but so do your AKGs.

Re: kick drum mic

oh yea, & it's indestrucable just like the 57's are.

Re: kick drum mic

Shure beta or a Yamaha subkick, and trigger it. Then mix the signal to taste.

Shure Beta52, AKG D112, EV RE20 are pretty standard. I've seen 421's and 414's used as well. With pads and a little care most decent large diaphragm condensors can work.

Re: kick drum mic

Thanks everybody for the insites.

I looked around and my cheap arse found the Blue Ball at GC for $80. I've wanted to try one of their mics for a while now and so far I am happy with it on the kick.

Thanks again!
