I was listening to Killing Is my Business and I noticed that the solos sound.....weird. I don't know if it's the production or what but it's been really bugging me. Anyone care to share with the class what's up with it?
Chris Poland
For the guitars in the beginning of Looking Down the Cross, I read an article where Dave said he was trying to replicate the sound of a submarine he heard on TV.
Countdown was the same way. He actually made it sound worse. Countdown's original version was crystal freaking clear, sparkling even. He muddied up the sound and played games with different pieces of the songs.
I have the distinct pleasure of never having heard the remaster of Countdown. The very idea is offensive to me. The original production of that record is flawless. It's one of the albums I point to as an example of timeless, natural, great-sounding production value.
I have the remasters of RIP and CFI. I don't think they were that bad and I did like that the bass was more "present".
I still need to buy me the remaster for KIMB.
When those remasters came out I wondered how in the world they could improve on Countdown. They didn't obviously. The only remasters I kept were KIMB and PSBWB. The rest got sold.
What is CFI?
Dave replaced all the gang vocals by the band and crew with his own voice.
no way! why on earth would he have done that, out of spite? that's a moment in time that can't be replicated. If it was all jacked up, maybe, but it wasn't!
KIMB and PSBWB benefited from a second go. Those albums are great but the original treatments are almost unlistenable to me half the time.
Countdown For Ixtinction?
I hated the Rust remaster. Dave replaced all the gang vocals by the band and crew with his own voice and did unpleasant things to the drums. Totally killed the vibe of the original recording, which didn't need remastering in the first place.
