Kinda digging this LP JR

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

"Slimmer body"?

Yes, it has a slimmer body than a Junior, it's sort of like a Melody Maker with a maple top added to it. I think that's the reason for the name LPJ. It's a cross between a MM and an LP, with the simple features of a Junior. As I said, I did like the idea of it, and it may sound great, but I wish they would have offered a better color selection, and added a pickguard. It also has the rounded 50's-type neck profile, which I prefer, don't like the slim necks that predominate the production Gibsons these days. I'm also tired of them saying that a slim neck is somehow "faster", what the hell does that mean?.

Well a LP junior has a full thinkness les paul body and no maple top. That's how it ends up sounding like it does.

Thin mahogany and maple top would be a PRS or something.

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

The soapbar single coil pickup with fixed rod magnet polepieces has a historical precedent in the prototypes made by Seth Lover before he finalised the design that we now know and love as the P-90.

A pickup of very similar design and construction was used on the Blueshawk.

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

Yeah, and the yellow one is the best color they offer IMO, check out the super ugly gray color version. Why they chose these terrible colors is beyond me. And what are those weird P90's with non-adjustable polepieces?. Do they even sound like a regular P90?. And again, a pickguard would have helped on these, whether you need one on a beautifully-grained burst finish is a matter of taste, but on these plain colors it would have helped a lot. But then again, it might have added a couple of dollars to the price!.

Yeah, I was referring to all of the colors except the yellow. TV Yellow is very cool. The other colors make me puke if I look at them too long. The lack of a pickguard doesn't bother me at all, in fact I prefer not having it on this model. The P-90 pups are actually very cool. I haven't tried this type of P-90 yet, but would love to.

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

F it. I'd rock that grey one all day long. Like the slimmer body, the wraparound tailpiece, the minimalist vibe - kudos to Gibson for keeping it relatively simple this time around.

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

Yeah, I dig the grey... not sold on any of the other colors, but I'd like to see that blue in person...

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

It looks like a lot of fun. I'd wait til they blow 'em out for $399 though. I bought a Satin TV Yellow Les Paul Studio with Burstbucker Pros and Kluson tuners for $625, as a price comparison. Seems like a plank with wraparound Melody Maker should be cheaper. I bought my two Melody Makers (V and Explorer) for like $300 and change each.

Re: Kinda digging this LP JR

I went to Guitar Center and they happened to have one one the wall. So I grabbed the MM and played it for a few minutes. The color,it was the grey was dull and unappealing. The frets needed a good polish and the ends were very sharp. The guitar was not resonant and there was very little vibration felt through the neck.

I wanted to like, heck love this guitar, but it was not to be...this time. BTW the pickups were decent and may sound better when placed in a more responsive platform.

I played a gray/blue one the other day and I dug it. I was put together fine, needed a little bit of a setup but anything hanging on a rack at GC usually does. Felt like Rocker to me
