Kings of Clean Tone?

Who gets the most beautiful clean tones you've heard? There's a lot of talk about gain in the amp section, but what artists have clean tones to die for, and what do they use?

Not pushed clean or blues tones, I'm talking big fat lush CLEEEEN.

My favorite has to be Hershel Yatovitz from Chris Isaac's band. The Fender/Fender amp and Gretsch/Fender amp combination is just godly on Isaac's CD's.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

the guitarist from an Aussie band - "The beautiful girls"

plays a jazzmaster into a twin.....sounds sooo nice

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

B.B. King.

I always liked the Beetles clean tones.

This is the tone area that interest me the most. I seems like most people don't care about this anymore. IMO.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

If chorus'd or delay'd kleen kounts, I gotta give much love to mah boys Alex L. and Ty T.

If not, the best clean tone I've ever heard was me trying out a $2500 Gibson Historic '56 goldtop with P90s through a $2500 Marshall 1974X. Made me understand why guys of a certain age (mine-ish) kick high gain tones to the curb -- they can finally afford to do clean right. :butkick:

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

John Petrucci's clean tones are amazing, especially on the older stuff. So glassy..

Good call. It doesn't matter whether it's a LP, Strat, or Tele, he's got it down.
I think his favorite amp nowadays is a Toneking Comet. Basically a Fender Blackface boutique.

I love blackface and tweed cleans, but ironically my tone is totally based on EL-34's nowadays. With the right amp, EL-34's can sound just as good, but a little different than 6L6's. I guess it'd be considered British clean.

I think he would sound good through just about anything.......his touch is so precise.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Chris Rea, Mathias Jabs, Rudolf Schenker, Kirk Hammet on Black album(unforgiven, nothing else matters) Blackmore(Catch the Rainbow) David Gillmore.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

Jeff Buckley with a Telecaster going into a Fender Vibroverb. Lush and bell like tonal heaven!

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

What's this "clean" that you speak of?

As far as I'm concerned, but best part about cleans is that you can dial them out.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

After thinking about this for quite some time, the only guy I can think of (and who I listen to) that uses clean cleans is Billy Corgan.

Then again, Black Hole Sun just spontaniously started playing in my head.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

I saw the thread title and thought: Mark Knopfler. No contest needed to me. It's him.

Re: Kings of Clean Tone?

I think James Hetfield has the best clean sound...

or maybe EVH... or even Angus Young!

On a serious note, I always liked the sound of a clean Marshall with some sort of chorus - like in power ballad type stuff. Dont really have a specific artist because it is used so much. Dont really listen to too much jazz sadly so I cannot comment on that.

+1 The Sultans of Swing comes to mind! And Jimis clean tone is to die for. I think his tone on All along the watchtower is the ultimate claen tone.
