Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

I call bull.

Only because I've read the guy from Klon puts tar or something over his circuits, so people can't copy the layout of it all.

Also..how much ARE Centaurs anyway??

It's not tar and it is actually quite easy to get off if you feel like spending the time...

As for the clone on ebay, not sure...

Lew, if you want a Klon and don't want to wait the closest thing you can get is a Banzai Cold Fusion...I actually have AB'ed them and they are VERY close, scary close in fact. The Banzai is now discontinued but they do pop up quite often and can usally be had fairly cheep. FWIW, I actually prefered the Banzai to a real Klon but in the end it got sold as well...

You know Jeff Beck is my favorite living electric guitarist and he's using a Klon these days. His new live album is superb, IMO, and filled with great tones and I've been told he's using the Klon on this new recording.

I dunno - I need a new fuzz like another hole in the head. I put this beautiful pedal board together with all of my favorite new stuff on it so I could compare everyhting and in the end removed everything except my old Rat and the Jemini pedal as far as overdrives and distortion pedals go!

Love the Vox Satchurator, DS-1, TS-808, Fulltone '69, etc. but they're not on my board at the moment.

Truth is, I sound the most like me just plugging a favorite guitar straight into one of my old amps and just turning it up.

About $500 I think

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

The Klon is not a fuzz in terms of something like a Fuzz Face or Tonebender...think of the Klon of kind of a dirty boost. They are very low gain in terms of actual crunch but have a lot of boost that can be had with the volume control that works well, for some players running into an amp thats already being driven hard. Jeff's tone has a lot more to do with those pickups he's been using for years now and the cranked JTM-45 but the Klon is gettign used as his only boost these days.

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

They're not $500...if memory serves me a Klon, new costs around $375 or so but depending on Bill's work load the wait times can get quite high so on the used market they sell for stupid money...

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

Those "Clones" dont look to be very high quality as far as componets.

Not worth $130...

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

they may be overpriced but into an already overdriven amp they sound fantastic, i know a few guys with em and with the right rig they are the perfect pedal

Jeff Beck has never sounded better - and I've been a fan of his for over 40 years.

I have a KLON and used to use it as part of the pedal setup.

Since replaced it with a number of different pedals, latest being last week's ZIM (Foxrox).

Can never have enough pedals.

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

Over the last couple years, I have seen many claims of circuits being a clone of the Klon Centaur. It is quite possible that someone reverse engineered one and that is the only way a true clone can be done because the original schematic is not out there to be found, anywhere. From what I understand, Bill is VERY picky when it comes to parts and their tolerances to the point where he measures each and every part. Whether that is true or not, I don't know.

I'd steer clear of that one.

Edit: Apparently somebody did reverse engineer one and drew out the schematic. Interesting read on it too. Definitely a different circuit.

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

has anyone known of anyone coming up with a schematic for a klon? I would like to know what makes this pedal so amazing? how does it get its clipping? how does the tone controls work etc.

I'm not looking to copy it or steal it. just find out where the tone comes from...

Re: Klon Centaur clones on Ebay....

There are several guys that have de gooped them and cloned them...

Truth is it's a ho-hum pedal IMHO...it just didn't do anything for me, it's been a while and maybe I should try one again but when I tried it I remember thinking to myself "this is it...this is the mighty Klon?!"
