any one ever heard of the Koch Pedaltone ?
4 preamp tubes and 650 bucks knew.
is it worth it?im looking for the best possibly high gain sounds and people keep telling me to look for the HK tubeman.
which of the two has the smoother more harmonic distortion?
is the Koch Pedaltone worth it or im a better off with the tubeman?
thanks all

my amp is a peavey classic 50 4x10 combo and will be using with it.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

Haven't played the tubeman but I used to own a Pedaltone. It definitely does smooth overdrive.

Is it worth six bones? That's hard to say. I got mine used for about 350. For $650, I'd seriously consider applying that cost to a new amp.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

I have a Pedaltone, I run it next to a Boss GT-8 in four cable method and I think no other floorbased preamp can beat it tonewise. The versatility of both the tones and connectivity is also hard to beat, the only thing that beats it on that point is the ENGL Tubetoner (no longer produced, I believe), you can run that one stereo. But I never liked the tone, it's just so awfully bright, and not nearly as responsive and transparent as the Koch.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

could the koch get me into soldano/rectifier gain territory even thow it has its unique voicing?
meaning very high gain amp like tones?

Re: Koch Pedaltone

It has enough gain but IMO it's voiced wrong for Soldano-ish tone (I've owned two Soldanos). If you scoop the mids on the gain channel, you can get an aggresive Recto-like sound.

I can't agree on the Soldano-part, never having been able to try one for real. I do agree on the Recto-part though. There is one thing you have to consider about the Pedaltone though, which is the large amount of presence Koch amps tend to have. Some people may interpret this as 'fizziness' and may experience this to be a major turn-off. It actually comes in very handy when using the Pedaltone in a band though, as this really makes the amp cut through. This large amount of presence kinda sets it apart a bit from a Recto in my opinion.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

so for pure high gain tones could i put a mesa rectifier recording preamp in the balpark? just for comparisons sake.

I'd try a Pedaltone first to decide if you'll ever want to use that additional preamp :)

Re: Koch Pedaltone

Just found this thread... used to own a Pedatone loved it so much I bought the Koch Multitone 100 2x12. Great amps. Definetly can get you in the Soldano trip rec territory. IMHO better than a Trip Rec... not better than a Soldano. Own a Hot Rod 50 and to me it is the NUTS... anyone who plays poker will know that means it cannot be beat.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

I have a Koch Twintone II, and if it's anyway comparable to the pedaltone it should be very very good. I also agree with the high amounts of presence or treble that the amp has, it makes for nice clarity but it can turn a bit fizzy on the highest gain settings and when played at low volumes. But then, I don't really know why someone would put the gain on one on 10 as it's just too much.

Re: Koch Pedaltone

Hmm, never tried the Pedaltone but it's Koch and they don't make anything that is below 'amazing'.

The only thing I wanted to add to all this is that I had no fizzynes issues whatsoever when I tried the Multitone head through a Mesa 4x12 in a 3 hour band practise. I used a lot of gain and I even backed off the bass! No fizz just fat smooth grit! This is coming from someone who loves dark tones and hates fizz.
Amazing tone, I think Koch is voiced more towards Mesa than Soldano, lot's of low mids!

Still like my Bogner better though ;)
