I got two Hot Golds (6 and 13k) in a basswood body Strat with a Kahler trem. They sound really great, bright but balanced and has a slight compression, i.e. not exactly "vintage" but more "modern".
bump, man I really need to get one of my guitars down tonewise. especially my stratty strat. I'm looking for some with the vintage vibe but without the glassiness and poor distortion. From duncans the APS-1 w/ a twangbanger or custom flat seems suitable but maybe still too vinatge/typical/weak. Lace is supposed to have a couple great modern/vintage mixes (their original golds weren't great IMO). I've also been considering dimarzio's VirtuAL 2 series (but do stratsize buckers still sound as lively)
